inventory.overture.com shows how many searches were done in the last month on overture, but is there anway of extrapolating this to either know or guestimate how how many searches were made for the same term on Google?

In most of the cases I have heard that.

If overture is 10 then google is 20 and MSN is 5.

Don't rely on overture data, its not always the most reliable source

Right. I have been fooled a lot of times with overture data. :(

There's something more to clarify the reliability of overture data.

Fooled on the plus side or the minus side?

Is there a trusted source?

Fooled completely.

It is totally irrelevant sometimes.

Not plus or not minus. :(

I agree it can be misleading some times.

But then comes the question: Which would be the best tool or combinations of tools to - More Accuratelly - check the Popularity (regarding monthly searches) of a Term (keyword or group of keywords)?

I see:
  • Overture (usually US only)
  • MSN - The monthly trend is good, but limited, similar to Google, below.
  • Google Guesstimate 1 - Using AdWords/Keyword Tool /Keyword Search Volume so the more green colour on the bars the better the popularity.
  • Google Guesstimate 2 - Typing the first letters of your Term into the Google Toolbar Search field so if your Term appears as one of the suggestions it is probably a popular term.
  • WordTracker (for the correct wording order, using the free version with up to 100 results)
  • Trellian - Results from several search engines. Seems to be the most robust.
  • Overture from several country servers, from ovtkeywords.com but the results come via email.
  • Digital Point.com if you want to see WordTracker (15 results) and Overture (one server) side by side.
  • SpyFu.com - Not exactly Popularity but number of Search Results, Advertisers, Keword Cost/Day and specially Keyword Clicks/Day all together in the same place (that will not remain free... No, not my site)

If that would be possible to incorporate the best features of each one above, it would be simply fantastic!

Anyone?!

Overture is not the most accurate tool out. It uses Yahoo data which is the 3rd search engine(yes it is). If you want a good tool use this one: http://adlab.microsoft.com/ForecastV2/KeywordTrendsWeb.aspx

For google estimate it can be anywhere from 10-100 times what MSN says depending on the phrase.

Keyword discovery has one now too. They are pretty cool but I still like the MSN one best.

Thanks very much for that.

But one thing, it says impressions, is that the number of time that it's been searched or what?

Thanks

if im not mistaken, impressions is the search count in this case.

Yes that would be correct however it may not be how many who click. Because I rank for many phrases on MSN one of which gets about 5000 hits a month. So far this month I have not gotten one click. But with MSN ads I do get the impressions so I am not sure what is going on. It boils down to a estimate as well but it is the best I have seen.
