I’m not quite sure but I know I’ve wasted a good deal of money just registering something that struck me in the middle of the night and so I’m curious to see what the community has to say about the wasted domains they may have registered only to either give them away for next to nothing or simply allow them to peacefully expire.

So my question is, how much money do you think you’ve wasted in your entire domaining career by regging something that you wished you hadn’t just a few days later?

Every domain I own is hand regged - about 50 now :) (I know - big deal)

the only discount I got was on my .info's
the only regret I had was poker.game.tw - I still don't know
why I bought it...
No second thoughts about any of the others :)

I'm new to Internet, e-commerce & web biz but pretty new to domain trading & 'investment'... Am I missing something? Isn't this the very nature of the business, you register low (or buy expired or low in aftermarket) and hope upon hope that somebody will really need (pref. a bidding war of folks w/ deep pockets & urgent requirement) that name in the future so you can sell at profit?

No gaurantee, no real means of calculating time...

Am I wrong? I'm not looking for a flame war nor being sarcastic etc. but really inquiring.

i've only done hand reg. but eek about 60%-80% were bad ones that i regretted. The other 20% have more than made up for the shortcomings. I've wasted low X,XXX

You’re right Ben. However, this is meant to be a lighthearted thread where I get to discover some absolutely useless names that seemed like a good idea at the time. I’ve been into this for about 22 months now and I can recall dozens that I’ve registered and then knew almost as soon as I was done that they were no good.

Some domains I’ve registered because I though they might receive a fair amount of type in traffic but never did and within a few days it becomes obvious that they never will. Other names may make sense to me for a few minutes and then make no sense at all soon after.

Anyway, the nature of the game is not really what I had in mind when I started this thread.

Hello Emanuel,

I'd say you've got me beat by quite a bit. I'm probably at the $@&%#. I'd rather not say... :'(

Havn't lost any money on any of my domains. Worst I've done was sold one for $10 a few months after I bought it for $8.88 ;)

$0. Even my worst names (which to be honest weren't really that bad) sold for a profit.

There's been a few times I've regged bad names while going through droplists and later thought "what the..." but I've always made a profit selling them later. :)

I've got about 15-30 I wish i'd never bothered with, which is kind of painful. In all fairness, a good few of them were supposed to be for my own use on certain projects i've never actually got around to completing.

Good topic.

I would say I've been spending a little bit more on different TLDs mainly due to no .com and .net available. I'm currently interested in .li at $35 CHF per year, I was able to pick up sell.li, advertise.li, auction.li which to me are premium keywords in my market niche. I also decided to spent $79 reg fee on a .fm (bids.fm) which I'm also pretty excited about.

So yes, it appears I'm spending more and more. Now it's time to put some of these to work. :)

I've prob. wasted about $200 or so dollars, not bad considering I've been doing this for a few years, you lose some but win more.
