How many of you actually actively market your domains to potential buyers / end users :? :$:

How many of you park them and wait for something to happen :? :)

How many of you do none of the above :? :'(

I actively market names shortly after I get them...but without any response they just sit parked usually.

I tried to email, but they never reply. In some cases that I have the .com and they are using the .net, I was for sure they would be interested in my .com name, but they never replied.

So, I am developing the domains.

I like the idea of starting a thread or group that focuses on end user sales.

Great Idea

the problem with a direct / private sale to the end user is that they have to trust you

Thanks to 'Wot'. I think this a great thread and want to keep it alive.

I received two offers this week from direct marketing.

The first domain was a three word .com representing a popular product and a sales medium. Previously appraised at reg fee. I sent aprox. 15 Emails on saturday and received a mid $xxx offer from the CEO of a company using a similar Domain.

The second domain was two words plus the name of a city. Four words and 34 characters long. i sent out about 70emails and 40 faxes(free). i received three insulting replies such as "Your F***ing crazy", but yesterday received an enquiry that should result in a confirmed bid tommorow. ($xxx).

I also contacted several big players this week. People who have purchased domains in excess of $150,000. Two of them replied personaly saying my domains were not of interest but thanking me for my Email and wishing me good luck.

I think it is important that Emails are sent marked "Private & Confidential. For The Personal Attention Of whois". E mails should also be sent in a formal manner as if writing a business letter.

I worked in direct mail years before the internet and it was rare to acheive 1% sales. This was expensive as the cost of postage ,envelopes etc had to be recovered.

I think if you send a 1000 well directed emails on a regular basis you will receive results as I proved to myself this week.

Important to incorporate in your email/ fax or whatever that :

" should the name be suitable for your business plan then it can be transferred to you safely and securely by using an escrow service and I have included links for your information -- blah ,blah www.Escrow.com ,www.Sedo.com etc"

I think part of the problem with the younger generation is that email has made people forget the art of polite, professional letter writing.

Just because you are using email instead of pen and paper, this is no excuse for forgetting the courtesy and formality of professional letter writing.

I hear people in this forum talk alot about end users. I would think that people who pay over 1000 dollars for a domain name is not a end user. If you already own a website and/or you have enough money to pay for a high priced domain i would think you would have some knowledge of domain names or know somebody who does.

Not necessarily. Sometimes when I research sites that could be interested in one of my domains, the really dreadful names that I see in use, gives me great inspiration that someone would happily want to buy mine.

I think you brought up a good point. A lot of end users I tried to talk into are in love with their crappy names, they don't have a good name, but they still have the "faith" in them, you can't convince them.

Like most, domaining is NOT a full-time thing for me, so there are serious time contraints. Direct marketing of domains requires a good deal of time commitment and frankly its a pretty boring, monotonous task with so so results. However, like many I've always felt that this approach, if done right, can bring some good results and ought to be given a genuine try. Therefore, I've decided to outsource this job overseas whereby I'd offer to pay some base salary plus some share (5% ?) from the sales that happen as a direct result of the marketing efforts of the hired/contracted person. Most likely this person would need some orientation/training as to how to search for the right prospects and I'd need to set up a mechanism where I get a cc (or bc) of every e-mail sent out to prospective buyers. Any other suggestions?

I park mine and also posted that the domain will be for sale. For most cases, buyers buy my domains through emailing. I am making money with the PPC and also leading it to a higher possibility of a successful sale. It is a win-win situation in my case.
