How many accounts do you guys usally put on a Cpanel Server, with a 100mbit connection..

I usaually only allow 100 Accounts, but thats just me.

I know someone that has 1000 Accounts on his servers and it runs fine.

What do you think is too much?

Depends on the server. We have a couple things we judge by. Those being server load, hard drive space and other general specs.

It is true you can have servers with a thousand accounts on them, but on the flip side you can have servers with 1 account on them. For instance we have a couple Dual Xeon 2.8's dedicated to 1 site.

It depends on your business plan, your current server loads, your server expectations, and the other things mentioned above.

I know other hosting companies that friends have moved away from simply because using their SSH account they have seen 1,300+ clients on that one server (however they didn't see server performance issues on the server itself but it was the network that created most of the problems).

It really all depends on the server type, current customer resource usage, your business plan, and your future expectations from that server.

Like it has already been said, it all depends on your clients. Depends what is being hosted. If your only clients are personal websites, you can have a lot of accounts, but on the flip side, if you're hosting something like google or ebay, then you'd need multiple servers for one site.

if u have god combination of server then using 1k account will not bother but if ur server is not that good then 100 accounts will creat a headache

Something else to be aware of other than the server spec and type of sites is what additional programs you are running. Each time you add a module you are increasing the load, for example running a web mail service ( like squirrel ) can have dramatic consequences. Also check how many CRON jobs your users have running and what scripts they are being used on.
It is easy to give in to clients who want all sorts of features, once loaded you then realise that you have to provide extra support, keep them up to date and make sure you know the security issues.

All the best.

I agree, 500 was actually the number we aimed for. That was for the general sort of websites you will get signing up unless you are aiming at the higher end of the market.

All the best.

A lot less :)

Disc space is not really an issue ( I assume you are not one of the idiots going to offer unlimited anything ), Bandwidth is not usually a problem, data transfer is something to look out for. Again you are looking at what features you offer and the actual specs of the machine.

Difficult to tell without exact details of business model and pricing structue.

All the best

ill be looking for a second box @ 100

you need to get as many customers on a box to make a bigger profit on the box, but at the same time your clients still need the freedom to expand and breathe.

Actually that number is a bit high.

We use Dual Xeon 2.8's SCSIs and our largest server has 300 clients. Mind you chances are the company your referencing oversells therefore the customer suffers in terms of performance.

I have dual xeons at 3.8 each, 4gb ram.. thats my latest one anyway. Ill leave it between 100 - 200. My loads arent usually high, because i mainly host personal sites, and one site with bit torrents.

I have well over 1000 customers, i just wanted to get an idea of other companies. Ive been in the game almost 3 years..

Yo chronic, btw you use to host my friend lewis wright with natures-fury.co.uk
