How can I create a server from my box at home? I use my laptop most of the time and wanna turn my box into a server, but I want to leave windows and all my files on it. What do I have to do to get it like the big reseller accounts. I want PHP, JAVA, MYSQL, EMAIL, DNS names, and I think I will need an ip that changes. How can I do this? I will also need to know how to remote connect because right now I am 1hr away from my pc. I will offer hosting for free at first until I really get it running. I also want different FTP accounts and cpanel.

Can anyone help?

Hi, TheComputerGeek247

First get xampp - http://www.apachefriends.org/en/

included in XAMP :

* Apache HTTPD 2.0.54,
* MySQL 4.1.12,
* FileZilla FTP Server 0.9.8a,
* phpMyAdmin 2.6.2-pl1,
* OpenSSL 0.9.7g,
* eAccelerator 0.9.3,
* and more ...

Then sign up for thatip - http://www.thatip.com/

This allows you to map your domain name to you computers IP. And if you got a dynamic Ip that changes every month or so you can download their DNS Update Clients that connects to them and updates your ip every time it change.

Then you can get a free control panel like Zpanel - http://www.thezpanel.com/

It works good with Xampp .

Now remember if you are planning to host clients I advise you to get a reseller account from a hosting company that has great connection speed.

Good Luck !

Well Maintaining a Http Web Server is much more harder than maintaining game Server . And if u want http server u will need atleast 10mb upload and download speeds Without which if u plan to host clients no one will stick to ur server. Second u need to specify ur computer hardware also , cause i know that if u going to host clients and need sql , sql alone takes most of the cpu cycles. If u want to setup game servers let me know i doing that for ages now and if u want remote control of ur pc from laptop go get real vnc off :
www.realvnc.com and i wont charge u nothing if u want to setup game servers if u have good hardware ( hmm say 2 gb ram, atleast 80gb hdd, p4 HT processor) and a good Line atleast minimum needed is 10mb without which all i have to say is good luck... :snaphappy:

if you considering hosting a website from joe public to use, think again

if you considering turning into a developer box. use iis and set up php, mysql etc etc. take you 3 hours most. google is your freind.

Yeah I do not think people would signup to your hosting for free, forget charging down the road. Unless you have some high speed lines going to/by your house for some reason?!? Some linux distros come ready to install php/mysql/etc/etc, so you could probably find one and make things easy.

By now i'm not using XAMPP anymore, now using apache2triad, its awesome, with almost all there : mail server, ftp server, apache2, php, mod_perl, mod_phyton, mysql, phpmyadmin. so... it's your decision to choose wich one :)

apache2triad
