How Google ranks its non-paid results compared to others

I noticed that Google ranks it's non-paid results (the main column, not the pay per click or sponsored searches) differently than MSN and Yahoo.

Why is that?

I typed in "document assistant" in the search box for google and I saw this URL - www.documentassistant.com as the #1 result out of over 80,000,000 search results. Which makes sense because the URL is named "document assistant."

However, when I tried the same thing for MSN and Yahoo, the URL www.documentassistant.com does not show up...not even in the first 4 pages of results.

Then I tried "document assistance" and saw the URL www.documentassistance.com as the #1 result in Google....however, not the same result for MSN and Yahoo.

My conclusion is that Google takes into heavy consideration your URL name and makes that as one of the keywords as part of it's search even if it doesn't have spaces between the words or phrases (i.e. "documentassistant" - google treats it as "document assistant").

Is this true? Can someone confirm or have a better explanation as to WHY and HOW Google ranks it's non-paid results....

Thanks!

basically yeah. having the keywords in the domain name itself is the best way to achieve greater SEO. You could even own document-assist.com as Google doesn't recognize the dash.

My site name is stateexams.org but searching state exams does not make it show up first, you have to type stateexam without spaces to make it show up. So I am not so sure if that is the reason why.

It all depends on marketing. Having a URL with your keyword in it can make marketing for Google extremely easier, but not in all cases.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

As for marketing and x11joex11's "state exams" -- how does state exams improve in the rankings?

You mean to say the Document Assist, Document Assistant, and Document Assistance URL owners performed some type of marketing in order to gain the top spots? Or was it just purely the URL name that got them that top spot?

I noticed that on msn if you type state exams, (with spaces) my site shows up third (probably explaining my high traffic there lately), on yahoo and google no results. So google must be using some advanced formula that takes into account many things.

It will never purely be the URL that will result in a top ranking in the search engines, the search engines want to provide the user with the most relavent content and information possible, related to their search. Website owners will do this by writing thier site content based on the keywords they wish to focus on, (be it state exams or document assistance), so when the search engines spider the website it will place it in order of importance in regards to the content. Naturally having the keywords within the domain name is a great help but never soley based on this. Other methods of increasing search engine ranking include having numerous *relavent* sites linking to yours. It has to be relavent to your site tho. Remember search engines want to provide users with the most relavent information possible.

Posting Links on your Site - how? Hyperlinks?

I heard that I have to ask PERMISSION to post links on my site. I can't just post any LINKS I want on my site.

1. Do I have to ask permission from the owner of the site link in order to post that link on my site?

2. If and when I do get to post links....how must the links be posted? Does actual URL address need to be posted? Or can I post a hyperlink URL/Text?

Please advise!

Thanks!

If you want to go post a link of some other site I don't think they can stop you, so long as you aren't saying anything that damages them, you should be fine. You know the whole free speech thing with 'responsibility'.

Thanks for the response. That's what I thought anyways, but I just want to make sure...

Any advise on if it even matters on how the links are shown on the page?

for once, something i know about

google, yahoo and msn all use different algorithms, hence they all have different rankings. Google relies heavily on backlinks, the more backlinks to your site, targetted relevant backlinks, with anchor, then the better you will do on google

MSN will take ANY links, anything and everything counts for msn link wise, but this could penalise you in google, ie. certain link building strategies so be careful, and msn is very on-page optimisation friendly

Yahoo seems to love more updated content, with backlinks and good onpage optimisation aswell

Overall, keyword in a domain doesnt mean jack sh*t. Why sites normally rank high for their site name is because people link to the site as their name, therefore links to the site include the site name as "anchor text", and this is what search engine spiders look at

I couldnt rank higher than google no matter how hard i tried, due to the number of people linking to google, but i know ranking higher than namepros for the search "namepros", is one hell of a challenge, but by no means is it impossible

GIve me the money and i will do it before the next google update ;) :P

Hope that helps

Any other seo questions let me know, its MY AREA haha

take care

One of the most important factors in ranking high is having your specific keywords in the domain. Note, I said one, im sure most SEO experts would agree with me on this.

Thanks to both of your responses. That's the hard thing about this SEO industry....is that us, newbies or novices, don't know who to go to or who to trust (no offense SEO experts reading this) when it comes to SEO stuff.

SEO is such a high paying market strategy for small business owners like myself that we are very cautious in choosing an SEO expert or even an SEO strategy.

Friends of mine have approached me thinking I'm an expert because I somehow got my site to be #1 in google (documentassistant.com). I told them, I didn't do anything but submit my site for free to the major search engines.

In any case, I dropped in yahoo from #15 to #19. I don't even know why!?!?!?

Good luck to all small online business owners trying to compete in the rankings. It may be worth it and it may be not.

If someone is willing to offer a very good SEO price for my site and present a plan that I can understand and trust, I'm willing to pay for that good price.

Thanks!

erm..no its not!!

it CAN be an important factor if the competition is low, but if theres a bit of compettiion on the keyword, the keyword in the domain will have little effect

You want proof?

Type computers in google, no.2 is the apple site

Then look at the cache of the site: http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:5iRmnZTn43cJ:www.apple.com/+computers&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2

Notable im referring to the line that says :These terms only appear in links pointing to this page: computers

Why is that? Its because its more focused on backlinks with the anchor text computers than it is a keyword?

You wouldnt want to be my client. Fair enough, but you clearly dont have a clue so you have a lot of learning to do

So clients come with no sites? LOL. what about company names. Say im working for a website design company called qwertyu
Do i tell them to change their domain to the keywords? NO!

Why? Because i can do without it, it keeps them a brand, and keywords in a domain is certainly NOT one of the most important factors

Food for thought :)

motto of the story, to you guys. Just because someone has less posts doesnt mean they arent correct ;)

I can prove my thoeories and reasoning. Yes i didnt say it wasnt important factor, its certainly NOT "one of the most important factors", and its only important when the competition is low to help in ranking, other than that, you are going to have to build up the anchor text backlinks or you have no chance

Post no. 38 for me, dont judge on post count, please judge on proof evidence, and the ability to explain ;)
