How far back do expired domain services go?

I've been trying to figure out how far back expired domain name services go. Do most just cover the last few days of expired domains by comparing the list from one day's zonefile with the list from the previous day's? Do any services go back years rather than days?

AFAIK the registrars get lists of deleting domains from the registries, for the gTLDs. For other extensions it depends.
So they don't need the zone files, which may be incomplete.
Domain names that are on hold or have no name servers do not show up in the zone file, so their deletion would be undetected.

I'm just playing with some historical deletion data going back about 11 years. I'm not sure when the registrars started getting the deleting names lists but some of this data might predate that time.
