How do you spot domain trends BEFORE they explode? (like claw keyword did)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking a lot about how some domain investors manage to catch trends before they explode , not after everyone is already rushing in.

Before asking my question, I wanted to share what I already know :

  • Google Trends : useful to spot rising keywords, but often a bit late since the trend is already visible to the public

  • TechCrunch : probably one of the best sources I’ve found to discover emerging startups and ideas before they go mainstream

For example, I noticed how certain keywords (like “CLAW”,"VIBE CODING" in some recent contexts) suddenly gain popularity after being tied to new products or startups and by then, most good domains are already taken.

So my question is:

  • How do you consistently identify domain name trends before they become obvious?

More specifically:
  • Are there niche sources, communities, or tools you monitor daily ?
  • Is it more about pattern recognition over time rather than tools ?

Curious to hear how experienced domainers approach this.

It's a bit different. These people are just inflating the bubble in order to draw attention to a certain tld or specific keywords. They are not sharing their strategies, it's more like manipulation.
Well others do (like @AbdulBasit.com, @bmugford , @Eric Lyon , TonyNames, Logan @MediaCode , Doron, Keith DeBoer, Braden and Josh R) Obviously not everything is given away, but enough for it to be useful.

Otherwise everyone would be losing money and nobody would sell anything.

Useful information and an actual strategy for step-by-step picking of trends, keywords, TLDs, selling, managing a portfolio, etc., are quite different things. Indeed, they provide a lot of useful information and I have learned a lot here myself, No one argues with that. The point is that they do not share their actual strategies in details, and understandably so. I wouldn't do it either. It's easy to understand when you realize that none of the whales will come here and explain their step-by-step approach to trends, which was the OP's initial question. :xf.smile:

Why assume their success comes from chasing keyword trends?

There are plenty of other ways to find strong names with evergreen keywords, or at least grounded on solid footing.

It’s less about one secret source and more about stacking signals too early. Yes tools like Google Trends and TechCrunch are useful, but they only confirm trends, not predict them.

What works better is watching where innovation starts: developer communities (GitHub), product launches (Product Hunt), and early-stage discussions (X, Discords).

For me if I see the same term popping up again and again across different places before mainstream media picks it up, that is usually a good window.

I hardly ever buy "trend" domains.

If you look at most of my sales, they are relatively boring domains sold to end users.

Most of the terms I sell now were also good 10+ years ago. They weren't really trending terms.

I don't chase "trend" domains. Other than that, I've shared as much as possible on my blog over the years. Sometimes I've shared too much which has come back to haunt me but I'm always happy to share whatever I can. The entire domain community has given a lot so thank you everyone for sharing valuable information.

I wouldn't be here in this forum if I weren't learn a lot myself in general and from your posts in particular, also on some occasions, I believe, I've helped others as well. That's not a question at all, whether or not useful info is shared.

All I am saying is that no one who has a strategy will share the full details of it. Like when you say you help as much as you can, there is also the opposite side of what you can't, and that sounds very logical to me. My initial reply to the OP was that no one would give him detailed answer on trends here, and that's been true so far (obviously, some domainers don't follow trends, but others do).

For me, trend investing is less about grabbing every hot keyword. It is more about spotting when language moves from “people are talking about this” to “businesses are starting to build around this.”

That is where good domains usually start to matter.

I am so impressed over those (few) people who can see how "What happens (silently) today" can "Influence (strongly) tomorrow"

none of those, just follow interesting people in X and be aware of the news cycle, because by the time something interesting hits the "trends" it's too late (also be prepared for some loss, one 1 of 10 domains might become valuable, so choose wisely)

it's so obvious war would happen soon. you want the next conflict: taiwan war
other possible soft targets: panama canal, Hormuz is still hot, lebanon war
civil wars: bulgaria, hungary, belarus, slovakia, egypt
another pandemic is a tough sell, but anything around surveillance systems is hot

Both of those were predicted for many years if you're looking in the right places.

The challenge is that LOTS of things are predicted and only a handful will play out on a short enough timeline to make investments worthwhile. And the terms that win are usually not clear at first which makes the gamble even riskier.

Niche magazines (think science/technology) are a great source of upcoming terms that may have commercial applications in the near future.

Has anyone tried to use AI to calculate or reply with the domains with the highest likelihood of selling? has it worked for you?
