Hello,

My girlfriend's name is ******* and she is interested in *******.com to showcase her artwork and graphic design. Please let me know how much you'd like for the domain.

Thank you for your time,

-******

The domain is a female first name. Not too popular; but it is the very first result on Google when you search for this name.

How do you respond to such an offer? It could be exactly what it is... but it could be a disguised offer maybe?

Thanks for your time, namepros!

just state what's your desired price for the said domain, remember you're doing business, it doesn't matter if you're talking the boyfriend or who, if they reply back with appraisal then it's scam just like omnia have pointed out, if they negotiate know that you have a prospect.

use end user's price

updated.

Wow, thanks for the great response and the great advice! [I will get to +reps as soon as I can.]

I googled the email address and nothing "bad" comes up.

In fact, the email address is the name of a band; and the name attached to the email and signed at the close of the email is, according to looking at articles, myspace, etc, one of the band members.
And the band has their own website... but who doesn't? ;)

I've tried searching for art, artists, portfolios connected with this name, but there are too many for me to go through at the moment. I also searched for artists with this name AND the city where the band is from, but no luck yet.

Oh, and, no, my domain name is nothing close to band name, so I don't think they really want it for that.

I guess I will consider how much I really want for it and perhaps make a reply.

I most likely will not get around to that until tomorrow, so if you have anymore expert advice, I am all ears.

Thanks,
D

updated: email I recieved back

Hey all,

I responded to the inquiry (see the initial post) by basically asking if they had a number or range in mind. This is the response:

Hello,

She is just starting out and only does work on the side right now, so she couldn't afford much more than $100. But would be much appreciated if you considered her offer. We might also be able to work something out where she could do some graphic design work for you, in exchange for the site.

Let me know what you think. And thank you for your time,

-************

It's interesting that this is very similar to some of the postings above asserted.

If you have any additional thoughts to share, please go ahead. In a way, I hope this can be somewhat of a learning experience for anyone reading this thread - how to determine the sincerity of an offer, how to respond, etc.

Thanks,
D

Next time send Your number first and do not ask for a "range".

Simply pick a number that you would be happy with and stick to your guns. If they really want the domain, no matter for what reason, they will pay.

I would start high. Even if she doesnt have the money now obviously she really wants that name. She is never going to have another name. When she gets teh money she'll get in touch with you later.

The way I see it domain speculators perform a service by keeping quality domains out of the hands of nerds/geeks/artists and people who wouldn't make good use of them. Think purple.com.

I noticed you mentioned purple.com and not blue.com It seems like you have more respect for ppc that have absolutely no content as opposed to non-ppc sites with absolutely no content.

And of one of those "nerds" suddenly decided to park does that suddenly make them domain speculators?

I have made a post in the appraisals section, please post an appraisal if you have any thoughts.

It's BS imho. Playing to you emotionally. Set your price based on market value not on emotional value.

My response:

"Thank you for the contact. Currently I am selling this domain for $x,xxx. If you interested in further negotiations please reply".

Short simple and professional.

I love your response. Very professional.
