How do places like Sedo or Afternic work?

I am being active into the domain world for two years but mainly for own use, but I am getting really interested to try a bit of selling as well. But if I have a good name I think is worth money, what is the best strategy? Forums like this, marketplaces like eBay, or specialised sites like Sedo?

Also, do Sedo/Afternic charge anything to let you use their services? Is there a charge or intervention from their behalf for every domain you auction, or do they just charge membership fees?

Afternic charges a $20/year membership fee to list domains. Sedo does not. Both charge a commission on sales. Good luck!

How big is this commission?

Must say that commission is a bit of a turn off :( It may be more interesting to use forums like this or sites like eBay?

A turn off? Then you haven't taken the time to learn what you get for the commission charged. When you list your domain(s) at sites like Sedo or Afternic, your domain(s) are put in front of thousands of potential domain buyers. A small price to pay for the exposure you get. You also get escrow service built in. If your domain(s) have substantial value, you need an escrow service to protect yourself.

I have only listed the domains at SEDO, how do I find info about this? :)

I would suggest Sedo for selling domains...
I never made a sale (etc) at Afternic (don't forget you also have
to for the account)

I have sold many names through Afternic so the $20 annual fee is an incredibly good investment. It all boild down to the quality of your names. If your names suck, you're likely wasting your $20 by joining. If you have good names, the little $20 invesment will pay for itself many, many times over.

I Guess I am not the only one: http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/234721-is-afternic-worth-25-membership-fee.html

And IMHO my domains do not

Of course you're not the only one. There are just as many people who don't do well with Sedo, or any other domain marketplace. You have to keep in mind that there are a LOT of people on forums like this who think their namers are marketable, but they are not. A name may not "suck", but it may not be marketable either. You have to understand the mindset of the potential buyer that visits sites like Afternic, and analyze what it is they're looking for in a domain.

  • Some people sell names consistently from Afternic (or other domain marketplace).
  • Some people make no or few sales on Afternic (or other domain marketplace).

What do you think the difference is between these groups of people? Answer: The marketability of the names in their portfolio.

The size of their portfolio is another factor. But the same comparison applies. Take a room full of people who each have equally large portfolios, and some of them will consistently sell. Some will never sell, or hardly ever.

In my opinion you can not say that if a portfolio does not perform
well on afternic the domains "suck" or are not "marketable". IMO

If a domain name does not sell, it doesn't mean it "sucks" I never said that. You can have some really nice domains that will not sell, because they are not very marketable. That's the point I'm trying to make.

Marketable = In demand by buyers.
Remove the word "marketable" from my previous statements if you prefer, and replace with "In demand by buyers". If you have a portfolio of names that are not "in demand by buyers", then naturally, you will make few if any sales.
