How do expired domain sites get their data?

Something I've always been curious about. How do all these sites get data on domains that have dropped and which registrar has them? Scrapers? Is there API's available at all these registrars or what? It's always been a curiosity, if anyone knows.

My guess, one or a combination of the following:

Zone File
Scraping
Whois

for .com/.net you can use the zone file but if you want data just download txt file for free from dynadot, namejet, snapames etc.

The data we have on drops comes from central registries.

For our expired auctions, what you see as the traffic is what we've received for the 30 days before the auction starts.
