How can I tell if a PR is real?

I bought a domain a couple of weeks ago on auction and from every page ranking website I have checked it shows a PR4, but I also don't see any backilinks going to this domain.

So how could it have a PR4?
I read somewhere that a page rank can be achieved through blackhat and a redirect, so how can I find out if the PR4 is for real or if its really a false/positive of some kind?

Thanks

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
.US domains.US domains
try rankchecker.com and checkpagerank.net

does the domain redirect anywhere?

go to google and search info:example.com and see if the correct page displays.

How did you check backlinks? Are there literally zero?

The domain is indexed and is now in my account and has my nameservers so I don't know if it was redirected prior to my ownership.

Here is a screenshot of the the pagerank,

did you try googling for info:example.com and seeing what pops up?

Try a quick and dirty backlink check at http://backlinkwatch.com/ and see if there's any backlinks. Google doesn't show you everything anymore.

It looks legit so far but without knowing the domain there's no way for me to check for sure.

Yea I Googled it but the problem is it has a hyphen in the name and even when I do an exact search tons of links to the unhyphen name comes up.

thanks again

You're getting the hyphenated AND unhyphenated results when you google info:your-domain.tld ? Interesting...

Try info:your-domain.tld -site:yourdomain.tld

(where yourdomain.tld is the unhyphenated version.)

Same for any other searches where you don't want to see the unhyphented version: tack on a -site:unhyphenatedversion.tld to your query.

Might want to run it through OpenSiteExplorer - see what kind of links and DA they show for it.

SEOQuake is one of the best tools you can use to find out whether the ranking of a page is fake or not. It is also important to check out the number of backlinks that a page has to assess its strenghts. I page with a couple of backlinks is not worth a try in my opinion.

You can check the quality of pagerank based on the backlinks structure using checkpagerank.net

Only option to check whether the purchased domain has real PR 4 is to wait for the next PR update.

It is your domain name now, so why don't you use webmaster tools to check the backlinks to it?

If the PR you got is by a redirect (and if they stop redirect after sales), it is cheating.

Check your pages in Google with site:www.domain.com, if this indexed by same domain then check cache in Google with cache:www.domain.com, and if this cached by same domain then it's not a fake PR. It's real PR.
