Hi


the basic deal goes like this:

you the buyer agree to the sellers price
you send payment, then the seller either "pushes"(** see below paragraph) the domain to your account or you initiate a transfer request to the registrar of your choice.

to transfer a domain to another registrar, you will need the "authorization codes" which will be supplied to you from the seller.


if buying from another domainer:

make sure the seller is legitate owner and if possible has some sort of previous trader rating, referrals, tenure, etc.

the latter is to ensure the seller is professional and trustworthy, will follow thru on transactions, etc.

know where the domain is currently registered

if you get/have account at same registrar, it should expedite the transfer process.

**(in this case the seller simply "pushes" the domain from his/her account to your account. a push is an internal transfer from one account to another account within the SAME registrar)

payments:
most domainers use paypal for small deals or between trusted associates

others prefer escrow for larger $ deals and for higher sense of security

if buying from one of the various marketplaces like sedo, namejet, snapnames, etc., then you simply follow their respective procedures for buying and selling domain names.
