Now many of you might have heard how people are hotlinking images from the sites and are doing SEO to drive more traffic to their sites.
I don't want to go in detail here that how it is done. :D But I would like to say that if someone is doing it then please stop it. If you are planning to do it or if you ever read about it then also don't follow it. Traffic is good. Money is always welcomed but we are webmasters and we don't steal things weather it is someone's bandwidth or someone's images.
One thing I am sure is that google will crush this one out. It is just a matter of some tuning up and this trick is not going to work anymore.
I am not a lawyer also so I don't know what are the legalities of Image Hotlinking. But as long as my commonsense goes, I think If there is a notice on a website that says "You can Hotlink Images from us" then it is good. But if there is no notice, even if webmaster didn't put it or just doesn't knows his images can be hotlinked then we should not assume we can hotlink it.
Some months ago I had a client who said he didn't know any good hosting. I told him that go to that XYZ place. He got a hosting account and in 5 days his site was using 1 GB the very new site which I was not hoping will ever use 1 GB bandwidth in 5 days with 20 unqiues per day. He started shouting on host and on me.
This not only creates problems for the owner but for the people like you, and me who work for them.
If our custom created designs and our paintings and all that stuff are hotlinked from other sites to gain traffic how would we feel?
Search engines don't see what is in the image. And if this kind of things are going to work then I can see myself with a script that generates dynamic pages and dynamic image names, nice alt tags associated with it, and on image itself it will have a cool smiley no matter what you search.
So please try and boycott this kind of tricks and lets keep the web clean. Because if we start pushing in wrong kind of images or take advantage of it. Then maybe our children will search for a toy and will see an image of a sex toy :notme:
SEO doesn't always have to be fooling around with search engine bots. It is to help the bot know better about our site. It is the way to represent the content and structure of our site in digested form so bots can take them into consideration and rank them properly.
I know many people will disagree with me but I could not stop myself from expressing my feelings about it.
Some days ago I saw a thread in NP itself that how to make a search and then link to that search URL with keywords in it. That gives nice boost in the search engines. I accept I used to do SEO in past and I have done my part of work taking some sites where they should be. But some tricks must stop.
For all those webmasters who have images like this on their own websites I recommend that you open your cpanel and use hotlink protection function in it.
To activate the hotlink protection: -
- Click on hotlink protection button.
- Check to see the default sites allowed and if you have some sites of your own and want to fetch banners or something else from this site then add those sites in the list.
- Enter a comma separated file extensions in extensions to allow.
- Enter the address to redirect the hotlinking.
- Check allow direct requests tick box only if you are allowing direct URL access to non-HTML files.
- Hit the activate button.
