Obviously it would seem a hardlink would be better for SEO on keywords but if i have a bunch of sites hotlinking an image can I do the same using the alt= and title= tags on the link and get the same result as hardlinking a text link?

Sorry, a little new to this

Text links is much better!
Why?
-you can add anchor = you will get better SERP for this anchor in SEs.
-you can add Title tag, which is very important too, but most webmasters don't use it, because of lack of SEO knowledge.

text links are still much better... the search engine are trying to work more with images... it's just like radio and television. Radio came first then television came second.
