The value in these domains is in the potential, and so perhaps eBay isn't the best venue to value them.

Yes, absolutely they are. Quality of letters is a big factor. Top quality 3-letter .US domains have sold anywhere from a hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

As for these less desirable letter combinations, the extension is not yet mature enough that so called 'junk' letters are valuable. So while it's true they are not worth much now, it presents an opportunity to stash a few at reg fee for the future.
