Holding my domain name hostage!

I purchased a .info domain sometime last year from a registrar in England. Since then I have received nothing but trouble from them and I would like to transfer my domain to another registrar. I have set up an account with dotster and have started the domain transfer process. It sent out the authorization email aout 5 days ago. Now I get a reponse from dotsters (do not reply) email bot saying that they have received no response from the administrative contact and cannot proceed with the transfer. Of course they are receiving no reponse because my old registrar put themselves as the admin contact and would not let me change it. Now It looks like the old ones get to keep my domain :? . I thaught that the ICANN action made it so if you do not receive a response whithin 5 days that it is automatically approved? Is dotster violating this law? But most importantly, how do I get my domain back from them???

Any help would be appreciated,
George

the biggest problem that most domainers have is trying to save pennies on mom-and-pop registrars. i stick with godaddy, always have, always will. they have the best customer support and it's the most secure and reliable registrar by far.

unless you own 1,000's of domains i could hardly see why the $2 difference or whatever is enough to matter.

Owning 1,000's of domains makes that $2 difference absolutely massive.

I think he was saying that if you only have a couple domains, trying to get the best deal possible on a domain isn't worth the $2 savings having it at a no-name registrar... unless you have 1,000s of domains ;)

Instead of commenting about what George should have done, maybe it would be nice to HELP this first-time poster! He didn't ask for comments about what he did, but how to get out of that situation. He did not even mention, actually, if he registered with a cheap registrar - there are sometimes poor quality registrars which are not even cheap!

I had never such a problem, and I don't know what George should do, but instead of making comments about him, maybe somebody with experience could provide help, don't you think so?

Personally I think it might have been more helpful to mention the registrar at question.

If it were me, I would probably try to call the registrar/send e-mails and see what they have to say about this. There has to be some sort of way to contact them (http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/accreditation-qualified-list.html). If that doesn't exactly work out in your favor,

"If you'd like to submit a complaint about a registrar to ICANN, please send an email to <[email protected]>. Please include your name, your company/organization (if any), your email address, your phone number (optional), the name of the registrar, the specific domain names involved (if any), and a brief description of your problem or complaint. ICANN will forward your complaint to the registrar for review and further handling."

Also, just to ask, did you make sure you have the authorization code to transfer the domain and that the domain is unlocked? I'm assuming you can login to the registrar your domain is currently with to at least mange it (nameservers and such). That's pretty much all that you need to transfer a domain out--that the domain is unlocked and the authorization code.

Hope that was some sort of help!

I fully share your opinion! I am always amazed to see people raving about GD's support (!) and so on...

Thanks to Fka200 for providing helpful information to George.

George, Fka200 is right, it would help if you could mention the name of the registrar. Maybe somebody already had something to do with that registrar and could advise, if we know.

So who is the registrar ?
The first step would be to correct the admin contact E-mail.

You get what you pay for

Shop for price and a no name registration company I'm sorry you took that approach. I stick with the big us registrations and would never buy through a reseller or a mom and pop outfit.

out of sheer curiosity, which registrars are you guys referring to that's more secure and reliable than godaddy? i'll admit that their interface is clunky, but when you have a problem you can actually talk to someone on the phone, not fill out some form to get an automated response.

so many posts on here are about guys complaining about a registrar. domainers tend to take cost-cutting too far.

and anti-enom mentioned dotster was the registrar. btw, i just transferred a domain out of enom. their probably fine but still lol

Moniker, Fabulous.

There are a lot of horror stories with GoDaddy, but I should admit I didn't have any problem with them lately and their support was fine.

If I understand correctly, George wants to transfer to Dotster, but did no mention the name of the current registrar. And apparently the registrar does not allow for the admin contact to be changed - if this is really the case, definitely it would be good to know WHICH registrar it is.

[reply 2] Moniker is much safer then Godaddy. Godaddy makes some fishy stuff too, like locking domains after "spam report"

authorization code and unlocked

George,

Was your domain unlocked. It must be unlocked to be able to transfer. You susually can do that though your control panel at the company based in England.

Also with any .info transfer you must receive an authorization code. Where you able to retrieve that from your control panel or via an email. That must be generated from your Enlish based domain company. usually you can press a few buttons to generate the code.

It would not hurt to mention the problem company in England. Maybe someone here has used them before.

One-hit wonder poster, I assume. Was curious to know if the problem was solved but there have been 0 updates from OP to report on.

Oh well. Hope all went well anyways.

I hate when that happens!

Same problem - different registrar

Many of you seemed very willing to help the last guy - perhaps you'll do the same for me.
The registrar is Web Name Solution. (BTW, they are not a cheap registrar by price; only in service!)

- The credentials to access the account/domain no longer work (no changes from me or my client).
- I have left multiple phone messages and sent multiple e-mails to their Customer Support but have yet to receive a reply.
- I need the auth code from them as well as a password so I can unlock the domain.
- They have returned no communications.

Anyone else had issues with them and know what magic buttons to push to get a response?

I saw the reply about e-mailing ICANN. Perhaps that's what I need to do.

---------- Post added at 07:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:26 PM ----------

I sent that e-mail to ICANN. I'll let you know what comes of it.

Have you checked the info on the who-is to make sure it is still registered under your name (whois.sc)?

Also, you sure the name hasn't expired? Still won't make sense why you can't login.

I'm sure you've been to this link (Webname Solution Welcome to the Support Forum)

Looks like an extremely shady/crappy registrar.

PS: Have you tried a "forgot password" just in case?
