History of .com registration

Speed of registering new domains seems to have slowed a little in the second half of this year, probably due to the economy. But the number is still going up. Sources: here and here.

Pretty interesting to see how steady it has risen over the years though, and that we are approaching 80 million!

I have been watching how .com has been doing too

it has been steadily increasing with a fast pace in the last years

in the last couple of months it has kind of "stuck" around 77,000,000

in the last 10 days it has started inching higher again







some more stats ...

.cn (12,614,538) has passed .de (12,287,178) and is now in second place

Maybe the changes in domain tasting has also got something to do with it ?

while the tasting was still going on , I saw the Zone File Survey from RegistrarStats



with ~75,000,000 regs there should be about 200,000 renewals per day on average (this average can fluctuate quite some , though , depending on the day and period of the year , ie. reg-intensive days a year ago vs reg-mild or reg-slow days)



when back then I watched for a coupe of days the Grace Period Domains column in the Zone File Survey it showed 2,000,000 - 2,500,000 domains in Grace Period



multiplying the 200,0000 average by 5 (to cover for all 5 days of the Grace Period) gives 1,000,000 renewals which left out about 1,000,000 -1,500,000 regs which were due to tasting ... or about 300,000 new tastings every day

(the time period was during some time in the first quarter of 2008 so basically tasting was already on the downside because most domains were already tasted lol)








if you see the Zone File Survey today ... it shows 598,271 Grace Period Domains which seems quite ok at ~120,000/day for a rather mild registration period of the year



therefore the total numbers of .coms could have been affected (besides the economic environment) by the "exclusion" of those 1,000,000 - 1,500,000 tasted domains

since those have "stopped" either because of the new ICANN rules or because there aren't many more domains to taste , total numbers had to gradually cover the 1,000,000 -1,500,000 difference so as to come to the same total of about 77,000,000

maybe that is also a reason why total .com numbers have appeared rather stagnant for the last couple of months

small update on .coms ... even with the tough economic environment .com registrations have been raising a steady 20k-40k per day since the previous discussion in this thread and are currently at ...
