There is a search term I'm interested in, it's three keywords. If I were to purchase the .com, it would be 17 letters.

Depending on where I look, I see a decent amount of activity on those three keywords as a search query. 4mil to 8mil from this tool: web2 Check Traffic - Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 11:40:54

Estibot and Valuate say it's like a $320 domain.

Is this something I should go after, and put up a little mini-site? Or what do you all think? Websites in the niche aren't setting the world on fire, 20k to 100k or so monthly visitors, not a TON of competition, but some real huge spikes in traffic based on specific events that happen around the world and seems to be a steady trickle of traffic I might be able to rank well for, based on the search query and my domain corresponding.

Actually, as an example too. I see a bunch of activity for the search query 'recent fights,' but significantly less for 'recent fight.' Now recentfights.com is taken but it's a spammy site and doesn't even show up in results, and I can get recentfight.com and add relevant content - will I still show up for people who are searching that more common 'recent fights' as 'recentfight.com'? (Not the real names, trying to show my situation with the singular/plural thing...) And if they're searching for a term that is my domain name, and I have relevant content...well how high will I be in the results?

Advice, please. I feel like I should just reg it, but I always shoot from the hip, and my fiancee gets pissed, haha. THANK YOU.

What is the actual name, made from the three keywords you mentioned, that you would like to reg.? Just curious :)

And you mentioned that you always shoot from the hip... well i did that too a few times and often it ended up pretty bad once i got into investigating if the name would actually be worth anything. But who knows, you might get lucky

Haha, you know, I decided why not, it's all about learning and what's $10. I've avoided getting carried away and every purchase has been a learning process. So a couple hours ago I picked it up, you can see it here if you're curious. Please be gentle!! Haha.

But this is the fastest I've ever received traffic... Nothing significant, but I just got this a couple hours ago and threw some content up. this is the first place I've even mentioned the URL.

First off, you are looking at the wrong search figures. I just entered a 3 word keyword that I know for a fact gets 200-300 searches a day. The tool you linked to says it gets 2.5 million. Go to Google Keyword Tool, select "exact" match, and get some realistic numbers.

One "s" at the end of a domain can make all the difference. Domains give you an SEO advantage when they exactly match the keyword you are after, at least in my experience.

So far as the domain being 17 letters, that's no problem. I think the 15 letter rule was made up by people who want to keep all those nice longer domains for themselves. If the exact keywords in a domain get searched, that's all that matters. Assuming there's a market there.

I used a few different tools and don't really place faith in anything til I see it myself haha, but they all left me with the same question. Maybe knowing the domain gives you a clearer idea of what I'm asking concerning the singular and plural in this instance and how it affects me.

Thanks.

Thank you. It's just fun and I've got a fascination with UFOs so why not?

I've never had a site crawled so fast and so much by so many spiders. Not sure if that even means anything, but the few other sites I started up didn't get nearly that amount of attention.

Finnerup, also, I just noticed your signature. I've just posted a contest for a quick logo in the Design Contest section of the site you might be interested in, for this site we're talking about. Should check it out?
