Understanding Keywords

I've been trying to figure out the keyword thing for a few weeks now and I'm still a little confused.

Let's use the example: CASINOSEAS.COM. When I use the keyword tool, am I using the word "casino seas" as one term in the search, or do I do "casino" and then hit enter and put "seas" on the next line giving search results for both words?

I picked this as an example because as one set of words "casino seas" pruduces no results. However, if I do "casino" and then "seas", there are several thousand.

Obviously this question also applies to 3 word names as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great, thank you. So as I understand it, it's completely worthless to have 2 keywords in a name if they don't go together, right? Ex: BankingAnimals.

If you are trying to pick domain names based on search results then yes that statement will be true. HOWEVER you can still get "brandable domains" that may have no search volume BUT if sound "cool" it may pick up a few bucks for someone looking for a brandable name but those are held on much longer then something that people are actually looking for.

If the keywords go together it is better yes. That does not mean that you can not write your content to target one of the keywords in your domain name. As a matter of fact, your domain name could be hdhdhdieiendf and you could make it rank for "whatever you want" by writing content related to the keyword you want to target.

I do like to go for keyword domains though as they still give a little kick for ranking.

Let me tell you another thing...

Say, I have a site: LaptopGrader.com, for which the keyword would be "Laptop Grader". Now "Laptop Grader" might have low search volume, but for a developed site, that would not matter mostly. Few SEO and your site can rank well and get good traffic, sometimes even more than the search volume.

My point: Development and marketing can overcome low search volumes. I believe we should use search volume only to know the amount of people searching for that particular niche.

Please, do correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks,
gct

What about hyphenated domain names? How do they work with keywords?

Example: free-music.com Would I enter free-music into the keyword tool or just free music. I'm trying to understand why hyphenated domains are not desirable, especially since they appear to be very keyword friendly.

This is correct. Although, if it were brandable, which casinoseas is not, it could have value. E.g. Poker World would have value. (it's taken and developed).

With the keyword tool, you treat the hyphenated version the same you would the non-hyphenated version. Try to stick to one hyphen if you are going to reg hyphenated .coms.

In your example, just type free music.

It sounds like seas could just be part of your branding. Domains utilize words all the time just to have their main keyword in them - one that might not be available in other urls they researched. You'll need to find low-hanging fruit (easy-to-win) keywords that are derivatives of casino and build pages optimized for them. People spend so much time chasing after highly competitive keywords when the traffic really will come from winning thousands of long tail keyword searches.
