Hey guys, so I'm in the process of selling a domain and the guy I approached insisted that his company couldn't spend more than $500 even though he though it was worth more so I finally agreed and now he said this:

"Sorry to do this, but my partners just made clear to me that total budget including landing page is $500. If you can include construction of such a page, we'll make it work. You would just need to create the content / meta info as we have a CMS that can handle the rest."

I have little experience with actually developing a page so should I just tell him a lower price if so how much lower since I don't know how much development costs. I would've thought the company would just redirect it to their website but I guess not. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

If it was me, depending how much you need the money/or want to get rid of the domain, I would stick to my Guns.

It sounds like hes just playing you to get a better rate.

Remember you have the Commodity that he wants, if hes agreeing with you that its worth more then don't let him lowball you.

Stick to your guns.. If he wants content and landing page... I'd charge $25 per item. This shouldn't be hard as you can just throw together a quick wordpress site with a 250 word article.

Two lessons hopefully learned here are:

1) Always get an itemised agreement upfront, so that any time the client wants to change something -- no matter what his excuse -- you can make it a positive turn for yourself.

2) Throwing in landing pages and minisites should be part of any domain seller's anti-rejection toolbox. A quality LP can be had for just a few dollars, and a decent 5-10 minisite no more than $500 (and obviously at $500 you're talking super quality relative to the crap you see on Flippa, DigitalPoint et al. You can get it a lot cheaper than that of course.)

I've had a couple of situations where a prospect balked at an asking price, but when countered with a higher number that included a site and some basic hosting for a year they jumped. Don't think I had to learn that lesson twice.

That isn't a landing page.

The type of lander they are looking for probably requires design and copywriting skills.

This guy should probably be looking at regfee domains just to save time because a respectable designer is going to eat up too much of his budget.

They range from a few bucks for lackluster "developing nation" work to $x,xxx for upscale design firm work.

This guy's $500 approved budget is probably for design work and a very low cost (preferably regfee) domain. His superior may not even care if the lander is on theirdomain.com/lander, depending on how they are going to push the page.

Well, "few bucks/dollars" is an admittedly subjective term; I meant $100 or less, which will certainly get a serviceable landing page with images and copy. There's rather a lot of ground in between "lackluster 'developing nation'" work and "quality design firm" work, and more of it in dollars than in actual quality.

From experience, your statement about the likely allocation in the boss' mind about how much of the budget is to go to design vs. domain is probably accurate unfortunately; hence my statement about getting an agreement up front. I don't begrudge people having different ideas about a given transaction than I have but can't stand having my time wasted by some guy who commits to me but then turns out to have either not had the authority, or not been clear about how many people were being consulted etc.

Ahh...the magical partners that appeared out of nowhere ruse.

Just ask him straight out if he will put you in touch with the people who actually make the decisions and not the gopher-boy (who he obviously is) and see what he says :p

I would walk away personally, someone who does this is simply going to waste your time, I am sure you have other prospects around?

He has already intimated that he doesn't have the ability to make the decisions himself so why keep negotiating with him when he is obviously a low level lackey?

Never deal with someone who is not there to make a buying decision and is unable to sign on the dotted line, before he even walked into the negotiations he decided on a price and a tactic, those who state they have partners when told the price without actually mentioning at the first go are stalling. Tell him your price and stick to it. Be prepared to walk away or else be prepared to tattoo "MUG" across your forehead.

Thanks, and yeah I figured from the beginning that was the case but honestly I needed the money so was happy with it and didn't want to risk it and yeah I told him I couldn't develop it and he emailed right back that he would still take it anyway for the same price so it all worked out.
