I'm trying to buy a domain that expired august 28th. I believe the registrar holds the domain for 40 days and then ICANN holds it for an additional 35 days. What is the best way to approach this? should i use godaddy's backorder service? is it possible to buy now as it is in redemption? how would you guys go about this?? thanks!

Do a whois search and find out who the registrar is. 90% of registrars are affiliated with a namedrop/namecatch service who will rereg the name as soon as its available. The dropcatch service affiliated with the registrar who currently holds the name will be the first one to get a chance at re-registering it.

If its at a registrar with no dropcatch service, then just register it with anyone like snapnames.com

Post the registrar here and folks can tell you more.

But the tried-and-true methods would be:
www.snapnames.com (as mentioned above)
www.tdnam.com
www.pool.com
www.clubdrop.com
www.godaddy.com (backorder)
etc.

Of course, all of that is assuming that anyone else wants the domain. If it's not popular, no reason to use a service as you can probably hand register it. But if it's a domain you really want, and there's any chance someone else does also, use a service.

I usually only backorder with snapnames as I prefer thier open bidding process, there partners are -

https://www.snapnames.com/partners_registrar.jsp

I will see if I can find out who uses domaincontender, I'v never heard of them but I'me sure others here will have.

Hi all,

The domain i want to acquire could enter deletion period any day now and i still havent decided what to do.

I contacted the registrar to see if they are associated with a drop catch service, but they are not.

Would the registrar be able to re-register (under my name) a deleting domain? Do you think it would be a good idea to contact them about this?

Basically i'm kinda paranoid about using pool.com or snapnames.com. Isnt it bothersome to you guys that they could in theory inflate the price of a domain by bidding any amount they wish?? I want to own this domain!!
