Help getting pictures from broken Hard Drive

Hi,

Im looking for a little advice, my nephew's Home PC has stopped working (i dont know exact problem yet)

Is there any way i can retrieve pictures from his Hard drive either using his PC or installing his Hard drive in my PC??

Im not too bad with Pc's but have no idea of doing much more than Re-formatting and installing hardware so any advice, tutorials or links would help lots.

He is really worried about losing all his photo's from holiday, school...etc So it would be great to retrieve his pics before reformatting.
