I am nearly halfway through the first edit of my 150,000 word novel which is a sci-fi action based story

i had some trippy dreams when i gave smoking all the fun things and one particular dream stayed with me enough to decide to act on it and write something connected , a year and a bit later the first draft is done and although my vocabulary is somewhat lacking it is a good tale even if not expertly composed

Although i do a few questions

How did you go about getting your book published ?

Did you try a number of times before it was accepted

Did you write a novel or perhaps an ebook ?

Have the sales been more or less than what you hoped for ?

Did you get rejected and end the end just say F**k It i'll do an ebook/novel

where are you selling this ebook/novel

Maybe you made a site dedicated to the book at the main sales outlet ?

did it go worldwide ?

are you perhaps Steven King in disguise when you are here at namepros ?

What can you share with the class ?

All suggestions and advice much appreciated indeed

:talk:

Editing, Ahhhhhh Yeahhhhh, the fun stuff. My little book came to me, almost wrote itself, but the editing, that took a whole year and I never thought it would finish.

I self published, had more of wanting to make this into a screenplay, but who wouldn't like their book to be a best seller. If I only had the time to play with it more, but this thing called life just seems to get in the way.

If you want to play with what your book will really look like when finished, then www.Lulu.com will be lots of fun for you. When you get a clean draft, print one up, and just kick back on the couch and have your highlighter ready.

You can sit in front of the computer all day looking at it, but nothing beats holding a copy in your hand and reading it; this also helps you to fine tune it with each printing, and it starts to look pretty darn good when it's finished.

Any way, I don't have much experience as an author, but I wish you the best of luck and congrats on finishing your story, you should be very proud of yourself, it's one heck of an accomplishment!!!

repped ......kingdon , dgridley cant rep you again so soon

thanks for your imput , yes the editing is a fun chore and i am pleased to say the first half of the first time is no doubt contributing to a better end result ........quite exciting and i did print out the first two chapters for a 'physical aspect' unwilling to share the whole book yet but the first chapters have been enjoyed by the couple of people i have given a sneak peek

Although KingDon did you try to get it published , did you submit it to anyone i wonder ?

Have your self publishing efforts been worth while ?

Do you have an online connection (website or review)

have you considered an ebook / noval

P.s i will have a good look at lulu .......heard the name but never investigated before

Check out CreateSpace.com which is Amazon's print on demand system. You can have a book ready to sell, with an ISBN, on their system at no cost until something sells. If your editing missed a few things you can continue to edit the online copy.

I think the most important part, is to get through a couple of edits. Once you find your way through the first run, find someone who is really good with English to have a read through, you will need help. I was luck, I had three people to really go through it with me after my many re-writes, my old English professor, my assistant, and one of the guys from another forum who I've worked with for years.

I never pushed the book yet, but I am gonna head out to California next week and spen a month or two turning it into a screen play. We shall see what happens, but I don't care if it makes it, I enjoy the personal growth from FINISHING my book.

PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you in PDF; it's a short read, makes a great book for a 4 hour flight.

Here's a link to my my book: http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/13-valentines/6299063

I've sold maybe 50 over the last couple of years.

Rod, congrats on getting through the first draft. Everybody talks about writing a book, but damn few find the stuff to sit down and finish one (me included). I'm like you in that I like editing (I do it for a living, so juts as well).

I would suggest hanging out on marketing blogs/website, like Michel Fortin, Seth Godin, and others. Don't buy anything, just soak up the marketing ideas. Rather than approach a publishing house cold, try to find ways to come in with social proof (such as a fan base that has downloaded your book for free - and hopefully loves it.) Publishing houses don't want to take a chance on unknowns, but by going the ebook route (or blogging the story?) you can come in with a guaranteed fan base. At least that seems the best way in to me. Good luck.

I am not a novel writer but write poetry. Wrote about 80 poems the last half year and registered the intellectual property. Now I am planning to write another collection and as soon as I get well past 100 (like 120 to 150 poems) I hope to get them published.

FreeMusketeers and Lulu.com are reputable publishers but I want to do some more investigating first. That said, those who used them, can you tell if you were happy with their service or not?

Plenty of free time now, so who knows?

yep i have written 5 ebooks all up now, however it is like the music scene so any ambitions of becoming rich and famous are soon put back int their place, seems i write a good story but i am not a good writer. That's fine as my main passion os more for music, good to anyone that tries though because it is a good learning experience. I was once told that a ebook is just a pathway to a hard copy.

Guys this is an old thread, ebooks/books are not my passion at the moment, i think passion is the most important word when it comes to this stuff, i am kinda over it for now. Many thanks to all.
~
Not such a bad idea to bump this thread as i am sure many others may still wish to try so it's great to share the info, regards !
