Ten days into its series of renewal rate disclosures, Donuts has revealed that .guru’s rate currently stands at 63.4%.
COO Richard Tindal said that the registry’s overall renewal figure for the first 81,569 domains it sold was 68.4%.
The other two large TLDs in the batch — .photography and .clothing — came in at 75.7% and 74.0%, respectively.

Tindal wrote that he expects the numbers to improve over time:

"In March and April we expect the cumulative rate on all Donuts names to stabilize around 70%, and then trend upwards toward 80% as the average age of registrations increases and the proportion of names with website content continues to grow."

The renewal trends for all new gTLDs under Donuts can be found on its blog. They are generous enough to share the complete figures of renewals with the public, even though they are a private company.

I'm surprised. .guru renewal rate is 63.4%. I would thought it would be much lower.

An example of consumer inertia. Godaddy does auto-renewal by default and most new tlds were registered there. They heavily promoted .guru and .photographer.

"As great as those old .COMs are, when you buy a .COM from the registry in 2015 you're buying into 2015 quality, and that quality has declined to the point where names will soon renew below 50%."

Conversely with these new tlds you have the absolute best quality names renewing at ~70%. How bad will it get a few years down the line when only crap names are left?
