This was reported on Feb 27th. I wanted to do a real good tranlation but never got around to it. so before the news gets too old here is a basic translation:

In short, someone scanning the system managed to drop catch or somehow "snatch" some domains of major insurance firms in Germany , many of which are household names.

Today, Wednesday, a grabber (someone drop catching, mybe scanning the system for these domains) seized several de-domains of major German insurance firms. Company domains include (most of which are well known brands):provinzial.de, vbk.de, urv.de and ukv.de now registered in the name of Alexander Schubert registered, who lives according to the DeNIC WHOIS in Riga, Latvia. Schubert has a larger portfolio of attractive domain names without content.

What circumstances allowed this grabbing attack, is still in the dark. Heise online was only able to confirm that it happened and thatDeNIC claims no responsiblity. Supposedly a member of DeNIC made a mistake and accidentally released the domains for new registration. This member did not betray the registry. According to information a Mannheimer "society for applied Versicherungs-Informatik mbH" (GaVI), maintained as service provider the domains for some insurance companies.

Meanwhile, the insurance companies have contacted us. Because the domains are not only used for the website but also MX for email, the businesses are currently difficult to reach. The provincial insurance from Münster, Germany announced that they want to make a press release in the "next hours".

[Update 27.02.2013 16:40]:

According to whois of the .de registry DeNIC, at least some domains are again under the control of the original owner, namely the respective insurance or its service providers.DeNIC told us that the repatriation process is currently underway and must be coordinated between several members of the DeNIC eG. This could take some time. On the causes of the accidental transfer of domains "no comment". On the legal question, to what extent the repatriation of the domains is legally so easily feasible after a manufactured legally perfect at least by the first inspect transmission existed, the DeNIC wanted to take also currently no position.
