The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

It's their new thing called "Search Wiki".
It's meant for personalized SE.
They said it's just relevant for you, not general public.
This only work when you login to Google.

However, I am thinking...
Site A is crap site, but, somehow got on good SE placement.
More and more people remove them from their personalized SE.
Then, I think it's natural that Google will eventually remove Site A
from Public SE at some point.

they actually went and made searchwiki the default for google users who were logged in which was a bit weird (too advanced for the average user), but i think they should tone it down for now.

Im sure in the future, google will use user based data as a weight in determining SERPS. I hope so at least!

hopefully they will give very little weight on it as it's easy to manipulate.

Interesting, I expect it to be awhile until it is out of beta..

Completely agree -- it would be very easy to game. We see enough people buying and selling Diggs despite it being illegal. I wouldn't even think for a second people wouldn't outsource "clicking" these Up/Down arrows if they thought it would give them an advantage in the SERPs.

i think they're becoming more socially inclined catching to the trend in microblogging where people socially as a group or individual can influence the search results just look at twitter.com, but of course it will be dominated with people that have higher contacts per se.

so will it affect the overall search position if a site got removed from a lot of users! :alien:

As same like in ALexa ranking in which it depends on the user(with toolbar installed).... :(

Frankly, I am not a big fan of search wiki. People ranking number 2 will ask all their friends to search for the keyword and make them number 1.. BIG SEO companies with 100s of employees will hit a gold mine there.

There are so many crap sites that rank high in Google, they should do something about it, something that makes a difference. But as usual if and when they do the crap shows up again.

You are misinformed my friend. The Google search wiki "stumble - thumbs up/down” is for your eyes only. Been alot of discussion about it in the SEO industry, here is a good source for more info http://searchengineland.com/lands/google-searchwiki.php. But who knows what the future holds, Copper has an interesting point.

I think that they added this feature just for the sake of regular users, so they can "flag" a website they like. I don't think they'll pay that much attention to the "results" of that, because, as said earlier, it's very easy to trick.

But really how useful is it to the user? Once you search don't you generally find what you're looking for and then commit that to memory, bookmark it or forget about it?

What's the theory behind it from a user's perspective. Is it so that next time you complete that exact same search the preferred result is top? How often do you repeat the eaxct same search (as a normal user/customer)? I just can't see how it would ever benefit me as a user.

I think it sounds very much like a data-gathering exercise from Google. Whether or not it could improve search if this data is used in the future remains to be seen.

I agree with you mostly, especially with the last paragraph. And what's also kind of weird is that they implemented the Wiki feature directly to the search engine, without testing it in the experimental one.

Well, we'll see what happens.

Same thing that came to my mind when I first saw it.

I, for one, don't really care about this being on MY screen only, but I truly believe this is just something else to tweak the actual SERPS. Call it a conspiracy theory, but c'mon... every advantage that can be taken these days to make yourself bigger and badder is definitely being taken.
