Starting today Google is moving all its blogs to a new domain to help people recognize when they’re reading an official blog from Google. The new domain name is GoogleBlog.com.

These changes will roll out to all of Google’s blogs over time. The Google Webmaster Central blog is one of the first to move to the new domain name and now has a new address: webmasters.googleblog.com.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Makes me think about their .App purchase for 25 million, wondering if it was acquired Primarily as a defensive registration.

I believe it was definitely a defensive purchase. Their Google Play store is the Apple App Store's only major competitor.

The similar registration date of your mentioned domains is also interesting:

googleplus.com reg 2002
googlecars.com reg 2002
googledomains.com reg 2003
googlenews.com reg 2003
The website for googledomains.com already redirects to https://domains.google.com

and I predict the same for
googlenews.com -> news.google
googlecars.com -> cars.google
https://plus.google.com -> plus.google

That's not a prediction that is exactly what they are already doing now.

The odd thing is that Google did not announce that blogs would be moved to blog.google.com like their drive.google.com, docs.google.com. That is what makes this announcement so strange. GoogleBlogs.com is also not a premium name so it doesn't make any sense. Something is changing we just have to wait and see what it is.

The name of the software by the way is Google Docs, not Docs Google, Cars Google or News Google.

Yes, but...

googledomains.com > domains.google.com > that's a .com subdomain
googlenews.com > news.google > that's a .google* domain

So it would not be the same.

So Google have to decide (if they haven't allready) which one of those 'domain' - domains they will use in future as their 'main domain' for their 'domain' - domain and which one they will use as forwarding 'domain' - domain/s to their main 'domain' - domain:

domains.google.com (current main 'domain' - domain)
OR
domains.google (no current use)
OR
google.domains (current use as forwarding domain to their main 'domain' - domaindomains.google.com)

I think at the end, in future, they will only use their own TLD .google* for all their products / websites.

* TLD .google http://icannwiki.com/.google

Great catch. I actually misread the text. Thanks for correcting me.

It would make more sense to use blog.google than google.blog in my opinion (more professional). So in that sense, I agree with you.

But the phrase "Blog Google" doesn't sound as nice as "Google Blog". So it really depends. I don't think they will use Google.Blog but if they do, it will be a dramatic move by Alphabet and turn domaining on its head. It would be good for GTLDs, especially if they followed the move by using domains like Google.Domains, Verily.Blog, Jigsaw.Blog etc.

At this point we don't know but we are learning more everyday.

Google can use .Google but Alphabet doesn't have the rights to .ABC. So unless they register and win the rights to .Alphabet, .XYZ would be their best choice.

This whole Google 'game' seems chaotic but I think you point it out well.
Google created .google for all their existing products as a 'high secure web inside the world wide web' and we will realize this one day - maybe they have bigger plans with the www than anyone could imagine at this time.

Thanks King. I hope you invested in some domain hacks and .xyz in case .top doesn't pan out. I prefer the very short domains.
