It’s Official: Google Acquires Like.com
6 out of 27 comments thought that Google bought like.com for $100 million mainly for the domain. And Techcrunch comments are mostly domainer-hating techies. I was amazed that average folks can now intuitively valuate an obviously spectacular domain like like.com at $ tens of millions without any second thoughts.

For the record, I think Google bought like.com for their patent related to visual search. But I also think they may use like.com for something in the future; so it may have contributed to the purchase.

If they did, I think that it's a move directed against the facebook "LIKE" button which facebook is smartly spreading everywhere.
Facebook has built a 500+ million user "sandbox" on the internet and Google is not allowed to play in their sandbox.

If they really did spend that much mainly on the domain, then Google is unaware of the projected "death of the web". Or it shows that they are willing to throw a lot into fighting against the death of the web (at least until they too have a sandbox or access to facebook's sandbox or people move on from facebook).

This sale sounds like good news for domainers.

You didn't read the thread you've posted. No one believes Google bought the like.com domain for $100 million. The whole thread is a discussion on exactly what's the value.

Since when has Google ever cared about a domain? Everything at Google ends up at widgetname.google.com. Google is a sub-domain slut.

The image search technology sounds like the real meat of the deal.

This comment from Lou D is probably more closer to the truth:

---
Folks, this was about 8 or 9 brilliant engineers and a boatload of really good patents. Pretty simple. Their business is inconsequential and won’t last. Their IP will. They probably saved themselves 100M alone in litigation/settlement costs for stuff they are working on (Google is), by buying this portfolio.
---

That, and has been said, Google is trying to move in on Facebook's "Like" territory.

Image matching technology, pure and simple. This wasn't about the domain (or the fashion sites). Congrats to the sellers!

the domain itself like.com is only worth in 6 figures. But the site, with alexa 10k and probably lots of sales.

Also Google is using image match technology in it's Android OS. Wouldn't be surprised if that was part of their goal too.

I don't think like.com is worth anywhere near $100M. They paid most of the money for the technology.

I doubt like.com is worth 1 million

FWIW I hate the 'LIKE' button. E.g. youtube movies with graphic content is not something I'd like to 'LIKE', nor would I wish to punish quality footage with a DISLIKE... yet I'm expected to choose.

:(

Probably 6 domainers in the thread.

if you read article you will find this..."While terms of the deal were not disclosed, we’ve heard it’s valued at upwards of $100 million."

facebook keeps changing their stuff, it used to be "fan box", but now it is "like box", who knows next year it will be changed to something else.
