It's official today, at least I think so. Clicked on my bookmark for the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, and it's gone, or at least so changed that I don't recognize it any more. Worked fine yesterday, but gone today, without so much as a goodbye kiss.

I think now it's called the Keyword Planner, and you have to have a google account to access it (no problem there). I managed to get some exact search data on a term, but was unable to pull up any comparable search terms or other useful data. I hate it. The tool has been changed to be perhaps useful to advertising buyers, but seems useless now to domainers. Anyone else see any benefits to this new keywords tool? Any other similar services elsewhere? Maybe a google link to the old tool that I missed?? I despise change - Aggghh!

Sucks... that was one of my favorite tools for research. :(

I wonder if they are rolling this out geographically? I did eventually see a popup link to the old tool, which I bookmarked, but it will be gone soon enough according to the message. I will try to use without logging in and see if the old tool comes up.

@equity87 and Traveler: You are correct, it goes directly to keyword tool if you do not log in, but a note at top warns that it will be gone soon. I recommend all that want to run some stats for their keyword domains should do it now and not wait.

I still see the old tool but at the top of the page it says this

In the coming months, the external Keyword Tool will no longer be available. To get keyword ideas, sign in to your AdWords account and try Keyword Planner.

Once the Google keyword tool dies off there are a few alternative tools to play with. While they may not be as in-depth as google's keyword was, they may still assist you in some of your research. On a side note, The new Google Ad Planner thats going to replace the old tool looks like it may still provide useful data along with cost per click. It may just take a bit to get used to the new UI.

You can still access it if you are not logged in...

While logged in, I can still access the old tool with this link, maybe it will work for others:
https://adwords.google.com/o/Target...18654844&__o=kp&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS
If you are not logged in, you must log in first, then it will bring you to the tool.

I wonder if the death of the tool will prompt a replacement for the "Rosener Equation," a very handy formula for determining a price for premium generic domain names? Better do all you calculations now while you still can. For those not familiar, here's an overview courtesy of Domain Sherpa: http://www.domainsherpa.com/rosener-equation-value-domain-names/

Goodbye Google Adwords Keyword Tool, hello...

If you haven't heard, Google is doing away with the Google Keyword Tool.

When you visit the Keyword Tool, you'll see a message at the top of the page. "In the coming months, the external Keyword Tool will no longer be available. To get keyword ideas, sign in to your AdWords account and try Keyword Planner."

So, the only way to access keyword information appears to be through a person's Google Adwords account. So, it's not externally available, like the current Keyword Tool.

*Yes, I did do a search to make sure others haven't already brought up this topic. None found.*

The info below is after logging into the Adwords account.

How Keyword Planner is different from Keyword Tool

With Keyword Planner, we've combined the functionality of Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator to make it easier to plan search campaigns. As you start to use Keyword Planner, you'll likely notice some differences between Keyword Planner and Keyword Tool.
Historical search volume statistics

With Keyword Tool, we showed you statistics for broad match by default with the ability to get statistics for other match types, like phrase and exact match. With Keyword Planner, you'll get historical statistics only for exact match. To decide what match type to use with your keywords, add the keyword idea to your plan and review the traffic estimates for each match type.

In general, you'll notice that the average search volume data is higher in Keyword Planner as compared to the exact match search volume data you got with Keyword Tool. That's because we'll show you the average number of searches for a keyword idea on all devices (desktop and laptop computers, tablets, and mobile phones). With Keyword Tool, we showed you average search volume for desktop and laptop computers by default.
Changes in the data columns

In Keyword Planner, you'll notice several different data columns than those that you were used to seeing in Keyword Tool. Here are the differences:

Local monthly searches and global monthly searches: These two columns have been replaced by the "Average monthly searches" column, simplifying the search volume data you can get. The average monthly search volume is specific to your targeting settings, and you can get data for an entire country or individual cities and regions within a country. Note that you can still get global monthly search data by targeting all locations.
Ad share: This column has been removed. We're working on a new column that will give you insight into ad impression share data.
Google Search Network: This column has been replaced by the network option within the targeting settings. To get data for the entire Search Network, select the "Google and search partners" targeting option.
Search share: This column has been retired.
Approx. CPC (Search): This column has been replaced by the "Avg. CPC" column. You'll get more accurate data in the average cost-per-click column than you did in the approximate cost-per-click column.
Local search trends: This column doesn't appear in the Keyword Planner interface. However, you can still get search volume trends segmented by month when you download your historical statistics from Keyword Planner.
Extracted from webpage: This column has been removed from the Keyword Planner interface. However, you can still get the webpage the keyword idea came from when you download your historical statistics from Keyword Planner. Note that you'll only get this data when you search for keyword and ad group ideas based on a URL, like a webpage on your website.

This sounds interesting. I loved the Keyword Tool. But I think the Keyword Planner is better. We still have to wait for a few months, though.

In what way do you find the new keyword planner better for domainers? I am really very curious, as i find quite the opposite. :snaphappy:

Looks like it's back online, but they took away cpc data. I was able to use it when logged off.

I can't find it at all as of today, there is no link to go back and use it instead of the new planner. All I want to do is check a domain's keywords for search, competition, and CPC, but I have no idea how to now. :'(

Just noticed it finally gone today.

Logged into Adwords, picked Keyword Planner from the Tools tab.

So information is still there.

The Avg. Monthly Searches is:

"The average number of times people have searched for this exact keyword based on the targeting settings that you've selected."

So looks like it's set to exact match by default. It's what I use anyway, so that's good. Not sure if you can change it for people who like phrase or broad. Still going thru it.

"So looks like it's set to exact match by default."

Of course, it says that right on the front page, should have read it first :)

"With Keyword Tool, we showed you broad match statistics by default with the ability to get data for other match types, like phrase and exact match. But with Keyword Planner, you'll get historical statistics only for exact match."

Keyword Planner is a very nice tool once you sit down and read through all the information presented. Google does have quite a few reasons to do what they have and they explain almost all of it. It's like anything changes suck at first but grow on you over time ....just like this tool the first version was proclaimed to be better etc. Just give it a chance and do a bit of reading and I think you'll find it's still a very good tool to use.

I find it very easy to sue and still gets the information I need. Thing is the results are actually supposed to be more accurate. The related terms seem to be nice.

Keyword competition

With the recent passing of the extremely useful Google keyword tool, is there a comparable tool/app that doesn't cost a small fortune?
