Hey.. this is good news for those of you looking to develop your .MOBI sites.. ContentRobot has released the FREE iWPhone Wordpress Theme and Plugin.

From the site:

The iWPhone WordPress Plugin and Theme automatically reformats your blog’s content for optimized viewing on Apple’s iPhone. It detects the iPhone’s User Agent and serves up the content with the special theme only to iPhone visitors, all other browsers will view your WordPress blog with your current theme.

Maybe I misunderstood the post, but this seems more like bad news for .MOBI not good - it lessens the need for anyone to run a separate mobile version of their blog.

A site optimized for the iphone would not be compliant with the .MOBI standards either way. Those standards need revising or .MOBI is dead - all other mobile providers are going to have to scramble to meet the new bar that Apple has set, leaving the current .MOBI standards looking severely dated.

I say this not as a .MOBI "h8r" or to stir anything up on the board, but as a concerned .MOBI investor.

It's somewhat like mobisitegalore -- it allows your average domainer who's knowledge of html is limited or nonexistant the ability to put up a website which serves relevant content. In that regard, it is beneficial to .mobi (presumably creating fewer parked pages). The flipside of this, is as you said -- that this enables people to make .com sites which serve up mobile versions on demand without the need of any programming.

You're correct -- I just tested one of the sites optimized for the iphone and it scores a whopping 1/5 on mtld's test. Mtld definitely did not have the iphone, Nokia N95,... in mind when they set up their policies and they will certainly have to revise them within the next couple of years (before such phones become mainstream) if they wish to remain a possible contender in the mobile web.

I say this not as a .MOBI "h8r" or to stir anything up on the board, but as a concerned .MOBI investor.

Like I've been saying for months now -- mtld has to realize that time is not on their side here. They have to get their product out and rapidly gain mainstream acceptance unless they wish to limit themselves to a niche market, comparable to .org at the very best.

I don't understand, if iphone can view full web why they need a special Plugin for WP, is this contradictory?

I have a pda myself which I somewhat hacked into running applications it wasn't designed to run. It now runs the real web, just like the iphone. Because of the limited resolution (640x480 in my case; 320x480 in the iPhone's), plenty of scrolling would be involved in browsing the real web, should you choose to not have the text appear microscopic in size. This application would format pages for the iphone in a way similar to how .mobis format for cell phones, however it would take advantage of the unique features the iphone possesses to enhance the mobile web experience.

Thanks for the link Dave.

Hmm.. So, can you have 3 stylesheets for one site?

One for computers/laptops, one for mobiles/pda's and one for the iphone?

My mobi's look miniscule (and very lonely) on this iphone simulator.

D-: what to do!

Hmmm, do site now have to be Iphone compatiable ? what would happen if other device manufacuters or carrier decides to have their own standards?
A move like this is truely why dotmobi is needed.

The world is still waiting for other top players in the industry to respond with their own product.

There have been some discussion of Iphone crashing at some web sites may be due to compatiablity issue.

While credit should be given to Apple for raising the awareness of the mobile web(Oh ! Apple don't like to use the term:MOBILE WEB) but I belief they may be underestimating their competitors.

Just being realistic, this kind of stuff makes me see the risk involved in this ext. I think it'll all shake out though, IF the backers start doing some dancing, ie making .mobi the default on some of their new phones (nokia/samsung), promoting .mobi heavily, etc.

Also, like you said mtld needs to get mainstream acceptance soon, or come up with a reason why .mobi fits with all this new technology.

cant say this is something i wanted to hear. it would seem there will always be a place for .mobi if users come to know its a place for guaranteed compatibility (good content hopefully too) and it would seem that the mtld would not want to keep antiquated restrictions.

i think we agree that up til now, no one liked to surf web and mobi's use was clear. but mobi didnt come out then. still there's load time, too much content etc. etc. but many questions are now raised ...

will mtld restrictions become antiquated by technology?
if so, when will it happen?
did they agree to keep their restrictions concrete to get approved by icann?is there is any loophole language to change/loosen restrictions?
at some point anyone want to petition for them to do so?

btw - quite bearish on taking any new regs. anyone please help me with my last round so i can get some refunds on monday. i'd appreciate it. :|

they're in my "should i" thread

I see it as positive in the respect it allows the average joe to develop, rather than park..

i dunno. red flags going off that .mobi will be become antiquated soon enough if restrictions don't evolve with the times as needed.

Remember that movie with joe pesce where he's homeless and goes to Harvard.. the best thing about the Constitution is that our forefathers appreciated that they would not know the needs of the country in the future and allowed for the Constitution to change as needed through the times. Movie's not so great, but i think this basic premise will help .mobi, that is to be smart enough to know that we do not know but can allow for change to meet market need.

I still believe regardless of browsers and technology to brand sites as unified under "mobile" is very useful.

Hm, I think the iPhone's new interface can only benefit the entire playing field.. it allows you to easily browse normal web pages and this plugin allows you to develop with no real thought (just install and post as normal). Apple will have a huge market share in coming years IMO.. I'm getting in on the ground floor with this idea.

Not sure if this is a + or -. The reason things like the iPhone and similar devices don't worry me when it comes to mobi is that as quick as they evolve so does the computer. Mobile devices and computer stations will never be interchangelable and I think in the future they will continue to serve different functions. What the question for mobi is, is can it find its own purpose or not.

Well, I hadn't bought any .mobi until I saw this plugin/theme.. then bought two logonym .mobi: PHQNE.mobi and iPHQNE.mobi (I also own the .com's).. what do you think?

Thanks for the link Dave

(Also for .MOBI developers) All these sites look quite good on the iPhone simulator:

PropertyMaps.mobi compared to PropetyMaps.com [5/5]
Weather.mobi – Weather.com (as there is NO redirect)
Paramount.mobi
T-Mobile.mobi
Tim.mobi
Vodafone.mobi – Errors
BMW.mobi
Cisco.mobi
Edelman.mobi
ESPN.mobi
Ferrari.mobi – Errors
Forbes.mobi
FoxNews.mobi
Time.mobi
VCars.mobi
Schweiz.mobi

Check em out.

gosh, those look so much better than the .com's I tried to access when I played around with the iPhone. TRIED being the operative word because most of them took longer than 2 minutes to load.

I really don't know what Apple is thinking telling people that their .com experience will be great.

Most misspellings aren't worth the paper they're printed on. I don't see why gphones would have any value more than reg fee. Sorry, I just think it's a waste of money to start regging things like that just because iPhones.mobi is doing well on auction. Same thing when "flowers.mobi" sold for xxx,xxx and people start going and regging things like "bestflowers.mobi". Just rediculous! D-:

I guess the rationale is that if "flowers.mobi" is worth 200k, "bestflowers.mobi" should be worth at least 10% as much, right? Yeah, uhuh!?? :cy:
