Does anyone know of a way to do whois lookups at GoDaddy without continually getting banned after xx number of lookups?

do you have any info on how many lookups triggers the captcha question? Or any other info on how many lookups before you get banned. Is it the failure to answer the captcha question and continue to do the lookups which triggers the ban? Any other info you have would be helpful.

why don't you use a different whois tool, or a simple whois from shell ?

betterwhois.com is working for me at the moment. It is supposed to read all registrar information without you having to go to each registrar's website to do a WhoIS search.

BetterWhois is worse than GoDaddy's Whois. It requires a capture code for every entry.

how is that going to stop GoDaddy tracking my ip address for every lookup?

It works for most whois services. If you would like top avoid that I suppose you will need to register there.

Here's a tip for getting Whois info at Godaddy without having to enter Captcha info:

1. Enter domain name in search box.

2. When it says, "xxxxxx.com is already taken. (Get info)," click on Get info to see Whois info.

3. Later when Captcha eventually displays, simply click the back button on your Web browser and then click again on Get info to see Whois info without having to enter Captcha info.

I use http://iwhois.com for everything - they bring up all the whois info, and it's very fast.

Is there anyway to ping the domain and watch for an IP switch, rather than using a WhoIS?

That works fine until you get the dreaded "We are currently experiencing issues with GoDaddy whois. Please retry your search here." message. Hmm, but maybe that would work fine if you never clicked "here", and just recognised that was all you were going to get that time around. I use www.iwhois.com all the time, it's great, but it never occurred to me that that might do the trick, if you were willing to forgo some of the information until the next time. Hmm... let me think about that.

It all depends on how much info you need - most of the time, the basic info is good enough for me, and I click on the link if I need more info.
But since it only gets the GoDaddy site info from GoDaddy's whois server, and gets the other info from the domain's registry's whois, you only should get that on names registered with GoDaddy.
So overall, it should work...
