If anyone has taken a look at their Godaddy domain management tab there is a place where you can see how many times your domain has been looked at in a whois search.

My question is, is his whois search done from the Godaddy site and if so anyway to see who that was so we can contact them?

I would guess that it would be queries from their site. Sometimes third party sites don't show all the details when it comes to GoDaddy names, so people end up going to GoDaddy itself to do the lookup.

You don't need to be logged in, so I don't see how that it would even be possible to know who it was.

Not to mention, user privacy policy.

Evenif logged-in users could be captured to see if they are viewing domains for sale, it would have been rude to immediately send them an email without their consent, for the purpose of solicitation. If the buyer is interested, they'll send you an email instead.

You are correct but what is the difference then if we would email an end user out of the blue? Seems to be the same scenario

I found it when doing a spreadsheet of all my domains and it allows you to check the box to see the amount of whois hits

Domain management > tools > exportable lists > add new export.
Be sure to check boxes next to whois searches.

If you are trying to email an end user out of the blue, you are not involving Godaddy with the spam. You are doing it on your own. That's the difference.

it isn't the same as researching and reaching out to endusers at all.

1) researching and contacting endusers involves YOU doing the research, then contacting them and bringing the existence of your domain to their attention, and the benefits they would get by purchasing it.

2) knowing WHO was interested enough in your domain to check the whois info and then you magically being able to send them a solicitation to sell is not only invasive of their privacy and (I assume/hope) illegal, it is downright spooky. That would be like me being able to derive a telephone number from the ip addy for a visitor to a landing page of a domain of mine for sale, and 5 minutes later they get a nice telephone call from me saying "gosh, I see you checked out my domain just now.... wanna buy it? THAT would be grrrreat."

Perhaps what you COULD do is take that data and put up something a little more compelling/enticing to make an offer for the people that are looking up that domain. Chances are that before doing a whois lookup they are visiting the url itself to see if it is a live site/parked/non-resolving etc. good luck! SP
