GoDaddy Updating WHOIS After Expiration?

Has GoDaddy changed their "Terms" without telling us???

I noticed a few of my expired domain names have had their "WHOIS" information updated without telling me:

c/o GoDaddy Redemption Services
followed by GoDaddy address and phone number

Is this happening with anyone else?

DN

yes, its happening to everyone. they did it to try and curb people from contacting the owner in the whois after an auction for expired domains.

that sounds good and all but it really sucks as you can't transfer out domains after they expire anymore due to this. they really should of only made it kick in after the 18 day mark or something.

This is a good thing.

It's quite tiresome to buy a domain at auction, only to have it renewed and sold to someone else.

I suspect that owners still have 46 days after expiration to renew, although I could be wrong about this.

Does anyone know when this came into effect?

I noticed it about a week ago, and I figured the same thing that it helps to stop people from trying to make a deal with the original owner.

I understood it to be 45 days for the owner to renew it and on the 46th day its too late.

They announced it 13 Nov - more info here -

The whois change won’t prevent people from transferring domains to another registrar during the expiration process. The whois will be reverted if the registrant requests the transfer authorization code.

You should stop eating so many brussels sprouts :)

At least that GoDaddy notice clearly states that transfers out after expiration will still be allowed to proceed.

I wonder how many people had redemption period domains in their account they were planning on transferring out. Now they have to choose between $80 and letting them go.

Seems to apply to .com and .net, but not .org.

I think the ICANN rule is that registrars must approve transfer out requests right up until deletion or change of ownership.

But even if GoDaddy will still honor transfer requests, what about gaining registrars that send confirmation letters to the whois email? That isn't going to work if the whois is being changed to GoDaddy's email.

But don't Dynadot do something similar? I know at some point they change the whois entry to their own info, and they auction expiring names that can still be renewed by the owner.

Thanks everyone for all your feedback!

I tried it yesterday on one of my expired domain names (all steps up until the actual transfer). I requested the AUTH Code, and they updated the WHOIS back to the original, and also sent me the AUTH Code via my email on the WHOIS. Also, this morning I re-checked and the domain is still unlocked and the WHOIS is properly set to my information. So it looks like you can do the transfer...
