GoDaddy shows renewed then 30 days later redemption

So I track many names and get email alerts when status changes (I use gd monitoring).

Anyway I noticed this many times so I am trying to find out whats up.

I get an update from GD that a given names exp date changed from say march 6 2014 to march 6 2015

then a few weeks or so go by or a month and it shows status change to pending delete or redemption.

What exactly happened here, they are all godaddy names and they did not go to auction etc.

Did the person renew or not? To think all these cases featured a guy with a bad cc I doubt, does gd extend names in hopes guy will come and renew, I am really baffled by this.

The registrars renew domains because they can then get a refund before day 42 of original expiration.

They say they do this in the interest of the registrant, but, in fact, they do this so that they can auction off the name and make $$$.

If it doesn't sell, they get a refund and then dump the name at day 75-76 after expiration.
