GoDaddy Sees Surge In Baby Names

Web hosting provider and domain registrar Go Daddy (godaddy.com) announced on Thursday it is experiencing a surge in the number of people who are buying the rights to Web site names for their newborns or for a friend or relative's child.

Probably cause the average person doesn't know about that extention, just only the .com extention

My guess is that less than ½ of 1% have any knowledge of the extension.

I have owned Harkrider-com since 1999. I really liked using Richard@Harkrider-com for email (currently shut down due to spam). GD still insists I buy Richard Harkrider every time I checkout. No freakin way, especially since it is 16 characters long.

On July 03, Go Daddy put out a press release:

"THE IDEAL BABY GIFT? GO DADDY KNOWS!
Parents & Friends Are Buying Up Rights to Web site Names for Children"

It's actually very smart marketing by GoDaddy to plant the seed that
domains could be registered as baby gift while the domain
may still be available.

But how could GoDaddy know that someone is registering a domain for a Baby?

Presumably you have the same name as an adult that you had as a child.

Regarding the .name extension, in case anyone misunderstood,
neither the July 03 or July 06 press release makes any claim
regarding the .name extension or any other extension for that matter.

Probably a few educated guesses from whatever data they can discern. But...
it's a good marketing angle, anyway.

I'll be darned if some of them registered typos of Bob Parsons' name.
