Hi , I missed 2 auctions on GD , now I want to find out for how much they ended

I can't see the sales on Namebio ,

the domains were expired (at least this is what I know , because I have found them using expireddomains.net expired GD list )

I thought all GD expired auctions will be reported to Namebio ,

    what do you think ?

If you aren't sure those domains were sold, they might have been renewed before the deadline, or perhaps transferred to another registrar.

maybe , but those 2 sales happened on 2 different days , and I just remembered a 3ed one

I mean what are the chances that all of them are renewed

mike, Namebio may be filtering out the sales under $100. I searched at namebio but couldn't find sales under $100. I might be searching wrongly. Try to find sales under $100 and let us know if you can find any.

so, do we have 2 possibilities?

    1- those domains were renewed.
2- those domains were sold for under $100

If those domains had content as established websites and are currently the exact same websites when you visit those domains, then those domains were surely renewed by the owner(s). Because if they were sold at expired auction the buyer(s) would be unable to reinstate any of those websites without receiving website files from the owner.

If domain is renewed for 2 years, most likely the original owner renewed it, was not sold.
If domain was transferred to another registrar and has less than 1 year to expire, then it was transferred by the original owner, was not sold.

No need to go looking for big conspiracy theories. ;) ... GoDaddy simply doesn't report sales anymore. They are a private company and I'm guessing they want to keep that information for their own competitive advantage reasons?

They used to report sales .. but I think that changed around January of last year .. although can't be 100% sure.

Maybe get @Paul Nicks or @Joe Styler to give you an official answer as to why sales are now private .. and if there's any indirect way to find out (like maybe maybe using their appraisal tool for a very similar domain in hopes it spits out one of the domains you're looking for in "similar sales")

I am going to give Alex Jones a call on this one, it could be harry carry or something, lol

Seriously though, I lose names everyday at NameSilo that are renewed exactly at the midnight hour, right when i think i got it, it disappears without a trace.

The fact it's always at midnight might not be as big a coincidence as you think? Maybe there's a simple reason .. that maybe NameSilo batches all the management of their renewals at midnight .. so it only appears like all domains are always being renewed at the last minute. Or even more plausible .. they don't even remove the names from auction when removed .. and when the final account transfer processing is done for all auctioned domains, it simply kicks back a transfer error for all of them at the same time (end of day / midnight)

That is a very good theory and totally possible, I catch about 1 in 100 there, Slow and going, but usually worth the wait on Liquid names

They selectively expose sale figures on the Godaddy domain valuation tool at https://uk.godaddy.com/domain-value-appraisal

When you search a domain there, they show around ten related sales. But they seem to cluster between 1k and 2k, possibly to make you list domains for sale in that golden range.

I did see one $20 sale reported on there, but domains I sold on GD do not appear there. A lot of the sales they report end in 95, probably a set auction increment.

Surprised no one has tried scraping the valuation tool, but you'd really want some way to verify sales.

It's a complicated issue. To gather data respectfully we have to do an advanced search only for expired domains. Public auctions might not have the reserve met, and the way we get the data doesn't show whether or not the reserve was met, so we have to avoid them entirely. Raymond from TLDInvestors does send us some of their public auction results from time to time though.

The problem is that GoDaddy has a bug where some expired domains from their partner registrars don't show up in an advanced search for expired domains. I alerted them to this problem months ago but didn't get a response, so I'm not sure if they're working to fix it or not. I would expect it to be a priority because their partners are losing money by not showing up in common searches.

So yes, we are missing some GoDaddy expired auction data from their partner registrars. Although what others said is correct, sometimes the data is not there because it wasn't an expired auction, it closed below $100, or the domain was renewed/transferred before the auction ended.

The owner can renew name up to 30 days after expiry, in which case GD then cancel the auction. After that, up to day 35, the only way the owner can get the name back is to bid in the public auction.

This is different to how it was before - before an auction could close on day 35, bu then owner could transfer out for reg fee up to day 40+, which cancelled the auction sale, creating a lot of bogus reported sales and disappointment for bidders. Good thing they fixed that.

I think Godaddy has been in the school of hard knocks , After Bob Parsons left, It appears the recovery has been a tough road for them.

I am very confident that Godaddy will fully recover, these things take time and investigation to get to the root causes of the problems and correct them, They will, i am confident.

is there a way we could find out if the owner had renew the domain , through WHOIS ?

I found one of them on dsad , ended for $ 518 with 40 bids ,
I found another one on dsad daily list ( one day before the auction ends ) but can't find it on the sales (last time I saw it , it reached 120$ )

the 3ed , I found it here on NP for sale , I was there when the auction ended , I remember that it ended around 1200-1300 not sure though , when I wanted to check , I couldn't find it
( maybe the auction was held by the np owner at the first place )

We haven't published sales publicly (aside from comps for valuation) since we went public several years ago. NameBio etc do not get their sales data from us as a published feed but instead from following the auctions themselves as they close.

Hi @Sinh , could you make sure you are using the latest "GoDaddy Investor" app? I see it working fine and haven't heard similar complaints except from folks using an older version of the app.

Before we became public we had a mandated period of not releasing data and then after becoming public releasing sales data before our quarterly reports is a bit complicated. So we could release some sales data after the quarter is reported but we don't have an easy way to filter our sales data. There is a lot of it and currently we do not have a systematic way to filter things like Non Disclosure Agreements on sales, etc. We would have to manually sift through the data and clear everything which we're not going to do. At some point we may release more sales though. We know the value for the domain community as a whole to have more data available, it helps everyone. It is something we are for in principle but it requires building a solution that is compliant with all the various requirements we have to satisfy and we just don't have that yet.

@Michael is the most valuable person in the industry for domain investors with all he does at Namebio, in my opinion. Without his efforts over the last 5 years the aftermarket picture would be very foggy. This is a hard business to track anyway with all the games played but without Namebio the juice would not be worth the squeeze on the tracking data side.
