I've just noticed on a couple of domains that I no longer required and decided to allow to drop that the GoDaddy grace period for renewal now appears to be 14 days. Guess they need fodder for their domain auctions. Has anyone else noticed this?

Hmmm...Go Daddy apparently changed their legal prints to reflect 12 days:

If Go Daddy decides to renew your expired domain name on your behalf you will have a Renewal Grace Period during which you may reimburse Go Daddy for the renewal and keep your domain name. The Renewal Grace Period is currently 12 days but subject to change under the terms of Section 2 of this Agreement.

I remember it used to be 30 days when I read it a few months back. But then
again, registrars are free to decide to how long to keep expired names based
on their ability to afford such.

I wasn't aware of this change. They used to stay available for renewal for ages.
