After being on the site for a few days. It seems to me that the evaluations that GoDaddy generates for domain names are greatly overestimated. I saw a domain on this site that GD valued at $1,300 being offered for $10.

Any insights would be helpful as I am a newbie trying to sell my portfolio.

Thanks!

You place yourself in grave financial danger if you count on any automated appraisal software to give an accurate dollar value for a domain name.

Korganian,
Thanks for the speedy reply. I'm a newbie so I assumed the GD was the gold standard for price evaluation. Now that I think of it, that is naive.

So how do you get a good appraisal of what a domain is worth, not withstanding the old adage that it is worth what you can sell it for.

No automated appraisals should be trusted when it comes to value, GoDaddy or others.

Experience and paying close attention to sales data.

Is it even possible to liquidate a portfolio?

Unlikely, unless you have valuable names and even then you would have to offer discounted prices for a bulk sale.

Take a standard 6 sided dice.

Roll it
1,2,3,4 and 5 count as zero
6 counts as $1
repeat another nine times.

Sum the results and you will have calculated how much a $10 domain is probably worth ;)

The only real use for the GD tool they disabled, which was the showing of similar domain sales
(or at least listing prices as many of their "previous sales" appear to have never actually changed hands)

Welcome to NP, KC! As these guys have said, automated appraisals are almost meaningless. If you need just a rough estimate of wether your domain can be sold in bulk for next to nothing, vs it being a premium domain name, I would probably check a few different appraisal tools and maybe shoot for the mean or median. Again, proceed at your own risk.

Otherwise, you can request professional appraisals from various providers (Sedo, etc), or even here at NPs. Just keep in mind the old saying that one manโ€™s trash can be another oneโ€™s treasure. But, in the world of domaining, itโ€™s often the other way around โ€” estimate might be $1-2k, but youโ€™d be lucky to get a $100 for it from a fellow domainer. The market is over saturated.

In my experience, the bulk of domain sales are B2B, and other investors are looking to give you 3% of a domainโ€™s estimated value โ€” if youโ€™re lucky. Crazy, right? Thereโ€™s a lot to learn. I hope that helps!

I had a Quick Look at your portfolio and the harsh truth is I probably wouldnโ€™t hand register any of those names.

Even good portfolios with a track record of sales are hard to sell so a self proclaimed newbie portfolio who does not understand domain values is extremely unlikely to sell.

Well, that's not good news, but I appreciate your candor. I will rework my posts and see if I can't get some interest in individual names, even though unlikely.

Have a good one.
