GoDaddy Auctions -- Discussion, Acquisitions, and Sales

I searched the forum and could not find a thread dedicated solely to Godaddy auctions, which seem to be heating up lately.

I envision this thread as a place for discussion regarding YOUR sales and acquisitions, and general discussion about the auction venue itself, and, perhaps, some domain oddities that are popping up on the auction site, for example, high-priced domains that should be regfee.

:)

One caveat, though: for your own good, PLEASE do not reveal your auction win (or anyone else's, for that matter) until the domain has landed in your account because the original owner still has the option to renew it, and I know how vexing that can be. In other words, don't count your chickens until they're hatched.

On the other hand, if you're having second thoughts about your auction win, by all means tell us all about it.

I suppose that if an auction win is high profile, it's already out there, but, still...

Anyway, I'll start with three comments:

1. I won my first (and maybe last) intentional typo, and it's getting clicks (no $ so far, though): Forwx.com. I could not find a live TM on this term, but one never knows. I have mixed feelings about this one.

2. I accidentally clicked on a BIN that I didn't want (I wanted the one above it), but I decided to honor the bid anyway. Grrr..., so be careful before hitting the submit button. It's not in my account yet, so I can't really reveal it right now.

3. Currently, there's a weird .co domain at over $9,000, with three bidders duking it out. Again, I don't want to reveal what it is, but if you go to the most active auctions, it's number 1 (as of this posting).

Mods, I hope this thread is okay.

:)

Now favicongenerator has disappeared from my watch list.

Looks like it was renewed.

Price on that one surprised me; I'd have thought in the high x,xxx to low xx,xxx.

I predict the next big-bid name on expiring domain auctions will be HotelSystems.com. Currently low but we'll see it explode.

Does GoDaddy still publish a list of the domains it has sold either via it's auctions or via it's buy now/make offer listings? If so, what is the URL?

I also want to add to this question... How do you know what the closing price domains sold for on godaddy auctions?

I have had some domainers quote my buying price (from months ago) when negotiating a domain purchase. I'm not sure if they were watching the auctions or received the information elsewhere.

I have seen HybridDomainer post some higher priced sales on their website but is there another site that offers a more complete listing?

If you add an auction on your watch list before it closes, you'll find out the final price.

If the domain disappears shortly after the auction closes, then you know the sale never went through and was either renewed or transferred out.

I may be able to shed some light on this. From what I know, GoDaddy is now charging former owners to renew their domains. The price goes up the closer it gets to ~40 days after expiration. There are some well-known people who have twisted the GD auctions by letting their domains expire, go to auction, and then renewing after the auction ends. That way, they have an idea what the wholesale worth of their domain is. What you may not know is that GD allows transfers out of expired domains past the 40 days up to I believe the 45th day. I believe this gets around the additional charges. I've won several domains this year that were transferred out to another registrar immediately after the auction. I can tell you that from my experience there are a few people in our biz that are doing this. It really sucks when this happens because you've spent an hour or more of your time on each domain in research and auction.

@spikedo Correct, Paul Nicks has repeatedly said over and over and gets tired of me asking him I think. Go Daddy looks at their first responsibility to the registrant, they have up until day 45 to get the auth code and transfer out, they don't pay $80 or $250 or anything else.

You request, authcode, unlock, transfer to a place like Name.com for $8.25. You can do this up to and including the 45th day.

Phew! No posts in almost 20 days? Well I have a question...

How long has GoDaddy stopped showing the Registrant Data (or a very abbreviated version) on the whois. They force you to go to their website and enter a Turing code to see the information. That's a big PITA, imho. I've only just noticed this. I can be slow on the uptake sometimes :(

also, the whois info is not shown for expired domains in the auctions

also also, I found out that buying a backorder does not extend an auction membership - it just gives you one if you did not have one.

It's been a few years now but whois.sc and who.is were displaying registrant data for Godaddy the last time I checked.

That's strange. For me anything looked up on March 18th and before I get the Registrant Data, and from March 19th and onwards, I don't get the Registrant Data. So this is definitely new. And who.is isn't now showing all the Registrant Data. So I think your post is flawed.

Are you using a command line utility to get your whois data?

No. I'm using a gui. But the who.is data bears out the facts that GoDaddy have changed things around. The Registrant Data on who.is is now incomplete.

This is what I see as the Registrar Info from March 19th. Does anyone see anything different?

whois lookup at whois.godaddy.com...
Domain Name: XXXXXXXX.COM
Registrar URL: http://www.godaddy.com
Registrant Name: Xxxx Xxxx
Registrant Organization:
Name Server: NS1.ABOVE.COM
Name Server: NS2.ABOVE.COM
DNSSEC: unsigned

For complete domain details go to:
http://who.godaddy.com/whoischeck.aspx?domain=XXXXXXXXX.COM

No longer can you see Registrar Expiry Date or Admin eMail unless you go to GoDaddy's website and enter the turing code.

What? Does nobody have an opinion as to whether GoDaddy have changed their whois presentation, or not?

I use who.is mostly, because I just type "who.is/whois/" + the name for quick access.

Godaddy has limited the whois info for .com, .net via who.is in 2012 already. Who.is has always just shown the limited info since then. .Org registrant info is still accessible from who.is, even if the domain is with Godaddy.

Godaddy's whois does show all the information for a domain that is with them.

I have registered a domain (less than 60 days ago) at namesilo.com and sold it for 550 on GoDaddy auctions last night. Anyone know how this transaction will go through and the transfer of ownership will work?
