Geo + Keyword .coms, Yay or Nay?

For the last week or two I've been putting all my effort into picking up some geo+keyword .coms. It might just be a whole lot of wishful thinking on my part, but I think these type of names have great potential.

The only thing that worries me is that there doesn't seem to be much demand for these type of names on the aftermarket, unless it's super, prime keywords like "insurance", "real estate" or "travel".

Here are a few I picked up recently on the aftermarket, all are .com and all were less than $100 each.

HollywoodBars
ChicagoSeafood
BrooklynAutos
ManhattanHospital

I posted a few of these in the appraisal section, but all I really got was the sound of crickets chirping. I'm just curious if I'm ahead of my time here *lol*, or am I just wasting my money?

I think that these are pretty good domains. The more generic the keyword and more populous geo location, the better the domain (obviously :))

This reminds me of an old tool I used to use that is no longer available. It was called "word wizard". Basically you chose a keyword and then chose if you wanted it placed before or after the geo location. Then it would look up all of the TLDs of all 50 U.S. states or top 20 cities with that keyword before or after the geo location. It was really useful, miss that tool. Anyone know where to find a tool like that these days?

I love them for dev.
The days of being able to get deeply generic terms for cheap is over, but the net has evolved to the point where geotargeting makes more sense for many (most?) products and you can still get these. What good does an overly broad "seafood.com" do for the person in Texas who wants to eat lobster tomorrow? To them, TexasSeafood.com is a much better alternative... or, even better, DallasSeafood.com

Just make sure to do your keyword research ahead of time and be certain that enough people are actually searching for that term in order to warrant a domain purchase.

I think those are more than reg fee names. I would be happy to have them in my portfolio, with the exception of "ManhattanHospital", just because I don't see hospitals as and end user. I think "HollywoodBars" and "ChicagoSeafood" are especially nice domain names.

I had about 500 such names about year ago.
I only sold one for $500 to enduser.
I had to drop all of them.

I still think those domains are worth about $500 to local endusers.
But, it's not easy to sell it to them as most have almost zero idea about domain.

If you can offer them time to educate them, arrange web site for them, arrange hosting for them...
These domains could be nice local niche ;)

Other than that, stay away from it unless you are willing to wait little longer as I don't think it's ready to be served, yet ;)

One reason I like these is because if you had seafood (.com) etc... you are now looking at thousands of end users, with a domain like chicagoseafood etc... you can compile a list of end users in that city which will only be maybe 10-50 depending on the city and the keyword that follows the city and send your emails out, if you are successful selling these to end users then keep buying them, I own hundreds of city/keyword domains and mainly focus on the top 50 cities in population, pick cities with high population Top 50 Cities in the U.S. by Population and Rank — Infoplease.com and keyword combos that are searched for in high frequency https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal?defaultView=1 good luck.

Size of the city + likelyhood of people searching for the term

That's what set's LasVegasHotels.com apart from PodunkThriftStores.com

The ones you have are ok, not extraordinary - but worth something.

PPC doesn't usually work as well with these but some of these do as a development play of some scale... the traffic is usually minimal... and the ones that do get good traffic (LasVegasHotels.com, for example)are part of a larger network with a plan.

Thank you, everyone for your thoughtful advice. You've all given me aspects to consider with this type of name. I'll definitely continue to search for these names, but with a slightly higher set of standards than before. +reps for everyone :)

I'm not sure about Hospitals. Doesn't seem like there are too many and they probably would just go under their name. You never know though.

I like HollywoodBars.
