First, let me say that I'm a noob at domaining. It's been 3 weeks.

Now on to my question.

After being stuck with a few iphones at work (i was configuring exchange integration) I really questioned the relevance of .mobi.

Using the web was so natural, almost like using a really small laptop...and this is rev1!

I just can't really see a future for .mobi as every manufacturer is now going to make phones that mimic the iphones web friendliness.

Are there any other great features that I just don't know about when considering .mobi?

Well one reason is that if Apple sold 5 million sets in the next year to two, that would still only be less than 1% of mobile phone users. And at $500 dollars apiece plus internet access fees, the stampede to get one will be short and will settle down quickly as the 'must have its' and the ones that can afford it, claim theirs. And any new phones that come about with iphone like features, will not be in the 'under a $100' range, or $200 for that matter for awhile. So for the next 3-4 years or more, until this type of technology can be affordable and universal in all phones, there is that left over 'huge' percentage of the mobile market that will still want to access the internet and need to do so on the phones they have available to them now. It is in this time frame where mobi will be most viable and needed, and will have the opportunity to establish itself as 'guaranteed sites' that will work on all phones, no matter the screen size and features.

No matter what happens, .mobi can still always exist as a brand. Notice that .net doesn't have a real purpose either.

Ok, good answers. Thanks Guys.

Plus as has been mentioned thousands of times before the Iphone or any other mobile phone do not give a good internet experience. Iphone loads big webpages slowly and you have to zoom in on the bits you want to read. Also there are very few .com sites out there which are mobile friendly. .Mobi is still the answer for the mobile web experience. Remember also that the mobile user who is on the move wants quick relevant information and not struggle with big websites. Browsing at home on your desktop and browsing on the go are 2 different experiences with different needs and require different approaches. .Mobi is the answer.

Personally, I agree with you that sites designed for mobiles are the answer. And .mobi can help to achieve a good standard. But, I don't agree that .mobi is necessarily the answer. Even if I like .mobi and I wish it has success, this could be achieved without using .mobi.

" Could be achieved without .Mobi"

Sure but it is'nt and no-one is making a move except .Mobi. Although I wish .Mobi would start taking some action and start a consumer awareness campaign. So far they still have done nothing in that regard.

What is mtld's incentive to promote mobi at this point? The last thing I want to see are people taking the time to visit sites and going to mass parked pages, whose links mostly go to full blown web sites. What will that accomplish? I'll answer that. Frustrated users who will quickly figure out that typing in .mobi will most likely get you to a parked page. Why not skip this step and be just as frustrated waiting for the .com directly?

Until we all contribute to developing 1 or 2 sites, as well as giants like Google going mobi (it's coming...and think what mobi adsense will do for your developed sites), we'll have to be patient. But we can't just sit around and be patient. We have to contribute to our own cause. If we all rely on other domainers to develop, we're all in for a long haul and probable failure. Bottom line is, if you really want this to take off, you have to put in extra few hours of putting a simple site together. Instead of countless regging, invest your $10.00 a month (or less) in a hosting company and watch your future grow. It's not hard at all. And you'll find there are plenty of good folks on this board who will be willing to help you through if you get stuck.

Have you ever seen ad ad saying "go visit the .com of your choice" or "got .com?" The campaigns for .mobi have to come from each site owner promoting their .mobi site not from mtld.

OK but in that case it might be nice if the Mtld stops ignoring us altogether and gives us .Mobi domainers some credit where it's due since it's mainly the domainers like us in whose hands the future of .Mobi lies. I mean Pinky still has'nt shown up here again since that one visit and that after repeated requests.

Could someone explain why it's so important for Pinky visiting this forum?

Jeff, you agreed with Binaryman. Obviously you want some credits IMHO. Ohhh Jeff....

ADDED: Jeff, could you explain why you agreed with Binaryman statement, if you have time.

Thanks

Well Said

We all need to develope our sites. I have about 70 mobi names and I have developed around 6 so far and have 2-3 more coming by january (some I am getting devloped from pros here), some of my developed sites still need work and updating but theres content for people to use and there all hooked up to one another and with other mobi sites.

You can have a nice mobi site developed for free (and easy to do) It would be totaly free if you bought your name from godaddy with there free hosting with each name. Then sign up at www.mobisitegalore.com "thats also free and easy. Even if you don't know what to do with your name, they offer a goodie section which can put news links and a google search on your site. And also share links with others for another button.

First and foremost Pinky should kiss Rick's ass for getting newbie domainers hyped up about .mobi. Secondly he should show some appreciation to you guys for carrying the .mobi torch. Without you guys the torch would have already went out.

MKUT tell me why you disagree with my statement. But first read the posts I made here so you can see the context in which my statement was made.

But there isn't. Initially, it had a purpose (for "network oriented entities"), but it no longer does.
If you believe otherwise, please go ahead and enlighten me.

Sure, that's why people get penalized for registering .net for other purposes, right?
