.mobi Is .MOBI a thing of the past?

Hey guys.. just browsing through the .mobi forum and thought I'd say hi. My goal is not to crush anyones hopes or dreams, but I just have to ask the question: do you think .mobi will boom and be more popular from here?

Cell phones are advancing day by day, and many cell phones in the US already have regular access to the world wide web. From your cell phone, you can access google.com, yahoo.com, cnn.com, etc etc... and see the full page just as though you were using your PC. You can now download full images, video and more.

If I can get to these main sites now on my regular web browser in my phone, why would anyone use WAP? This is more sites for them to remember. Should I go to fun.mobi today or fun.com? We are now creating two indepentant world wide webs, and only limited by the device you are browsing from.

Dont know.. just a thought. WAP was great back in the day when phones didn't have web browsers. Now phones are very high tech. I doubt anyone using the iPHONE has ever went to a WAP site. I sure wouldn't.

So then what about .mobi? Is it a think of the past? Are sales going to start rolling off when people realize there is nothing special about .mobi? Just some thoughts and opinions of mine. Thanks for listening, and I encourage your feedback (I really don't know that much about .mobi).

Every so often someone comes along with the same old tired questions and rhetoric....sigh..how boring.

"So then what about .mobi? Is it a think of the past? Are sales going to start rolling off when people realize there is nothing special about .mobi? Just some thoughts and opinions of mine. Thanks for listening, and I encourage your feedback (I really don't know that much about .mobi)."

Why do you want to know? There's enough posts here to come to your own conclusions. I encourage you to read them instead of asking silly questions. If you dont believe that's fine with me.

Wow.. from your responses it seems like I am not the only one who has had this idea. Nice to know, maybe it shows something. Thanks for confirming my theory. Maybe new domainers will get some insite from this and realize not to invest in .mobi. Always looking out for you guys.. I hate seeing people throw away their money on the hopes of a future without making an informed decision. Now people can make informed decisions and buy them just because they want to :) Thanks for your feedback guys.

I have only seen an increase in interest, sales, and prices for my .mobis. Good luck with your domains.

Mike, I know you have a .mobi portfolio so I am going to act as if you are asking from a perspective of someone looking out for his investment. No, I don't think .mobi is a thing of the past.

Sites designed for mobile are not just compact .com sites that are autodetected by a smartphone. If you want to see what I mean, there is a mobile web browser available that takes .com sites and rips the tables apart to make them viewable on a phone. You can try it - get out your phone or the phone emulator at http://ready.mobi (which also shows whether a site is expected to load properly on a phone) and then type in http://mURL.mobi. Once you have mURL.mobi open, type in any .com website. Do those results look good to you?

Next, take a few moments to see the difference between http://weather.com and http://weather.mobi, or http://espn.com and http://espn.mobi.

There is a difference, and the difference is that .com sites are great for information that you need to see on your computer, big graphics, massive games, lots of text, things you want to see on a big screen. The rest of the time, a .mobi is great for on the go information. If you are sincere and have other questions please feel free to pm me.

Thanks coast. I never really thought of it like that... mobi being stripped down for mobile phones to show the most pertinant information because of the small screen. Such a simple concept.. but I never did think like that.

Yes I do have a mobi portfolio, and I was debating whether to keep investing or pull out. Your post has made me think twice about it now.

Coast nailed it! For "on the go internet" you don't want loads of info and complicated web pages. Simple is better in this case to get what you need quickly. Some people fail to realize that :alien:

repped coast :)

Early last year I was asking about what kind of mobi names would be valuable. Someone on a forum asked me a very pointed question about what people would want to see on a phone as compared to on a computer. It made a huge difference in the way I thought about .mobi, and led me down the path of becoming more of a developer and less of a name-only domainer. I think that is the mindset that one needs to be successful with .mobi at this early stage of the game, unless you have the financial resources to buy and hold. There's not much money in parking right now.

I would advise anyone in .mobi or otherwise to think carefully about names that make sense and would provide a valuable service if developed. Generic is better than brandable unless you are personally going to develop the brand.

Good luck, and again please let me know if I can help you. I have some examples of developed sites on http://mobienthusiast.mobi to give you some ideas of what can be made on a .mobi.

If you look at the iPhone's web showcase, you'll see that all sites tailered to iPhone are stripped down, so much for Apple's original rejection on .mobi. And there are many .mobi sites there also. Mine is one of them.

There is no TECHNICAL difference between .com and .mobi it is only marketing. .Com pages can auto-detect and redirect to a mobile webpage fit to your screen. Don't buy the hype. .TV is nothing different, it doesn't improve TV viewing or anything techincally different. If I owned a TV station I would a .tv, it's good to have options but don't buy hype that .mobi does something special.
