I didn't really understand the philosophy behind the free .tk domain names, but I'm starting to realise how they make money. It seems that the provide these free registrations to people, and many of them aren't used, or are left to expire. FreeNom places advertising on these domains, and the revenue from these provides the profit for the company, and allows them to pay a licence fee to the island of Tokelau.
What an interesting marketing concept. Of course many registrars do this with client's expired names. I wonder how long it will be before other registries cotton on, and start to retain names for their own profit. In fact is this the thinking behind Eurid's recent announcement.
