Faka fetai for using Dot TK! With this email
we would like to take the opportunity to
give a little update about Dot TK and the
Tokelau Islands.

Telecommunications Tokelau Corporation - Teletok,
and the Dot TK registry corporation, signed a letter
of intent last week to use the funds
from the Foundation Tokelau to increase the
current speed of the satellite Internet connection.
The parties agreed to triple the speed of the
current connectivity.

Only three years ago the first Internet connection
was introduced on the Tokelau Islands. Before
September 2003 only text email was available
through a 9600 bps connection. By increasing
the speed with a factor 30 at that time, the inhabitants
on all three atolls were able to see web pages,
photos and streaming video. Five work stations
were installed at that time. Thanks to the
effort of the local communities and external aid,
the number of work stations has been increased,
totaling 94 on all three atolls.

'The current 94 PC's, which are used in the local
Teletok offices, hospitals, schools, public offices,
and villages offices are having a hard time to
get a piece of the satellite bandwidth, if all
PCs are online at the same time. Recently it
became very popular and this means that early
in the mornings and late afternoons the Internet
is very slow. The need for communication and
information is growing every day so we need to
increase the speed in order to sustain the growth,
and to motivate our people to keep on learning
and communicating. We really have a need for speed!',
says Kolouei O'Brien, Minister of Telecommunications
of the Tokelau Government, in meetings with the
Dot TK Registry during the ICANN meetings in
Wellington, New Zealand.

During the next weeks, Teletok and Dot TK will
continue to work on planning this new
infrastructure and selecting possible partners
and solution providers. It might well be that a
solution might be in co-operating with other
small nations in the South Pacific to get decent
pricing from the various satellite operators.
