Since i mainly develop my domains and depend on the traffic I can rank for I use adwords for my stats before registering any domain ideas for the future. To check on some of my traffic stats to see how my sites are doing I use analytics for some, alexa for kicks as it only may use alexa toolbar users but still provides me with some ideas on traffic from those people and what areas of the world use there services most. As far as other site traffic I also like to use some of the plugins for my wordpress based blogs as they show me some pretty good results and exactly what pages or topics are viewed most right from my dashboard so its easy to view while updating the sites content.

For expired domains I often use

expireddomains[.]net

It supplies info about domains which are about to expire and expired domains from several registars and marketplaces like Godaddy, Snap and Sedo.

Needs free sign up though.

Google Trends is a good indicator for some stats. However it helps to know the specific keywords and trends for which you are searching.

[Atomic Domains]

I use Sydermate, gives you all the core important info on a domain. Then, if a domain past my Sydermate check, I use RankChecker to get the additional info such as PR, expiration date, etc.
