In celebration of the release of IE7 Loopia.se is offering unlimited (that's right!) IDN.se domains until the end of the year.

The site is in Swedish, but once you create an account you can switch the interface to English. In the meanwhile you can use Systranet.com or another translator help you out. Good luck.

BTW, the Swedish language has the standard 26-letter latin alphabet plus three additional letters å, ä, and ö. All of which are available on a standard Swedish keyboard.

I've gotten several PMs on this so I'd like to make it clear once more:

Only IDNs are free for this promotion. Swedish IDNs (Internation Domain Names) contain at least one of the following letters: å, ä, ö. If you try to purchase a domain without one of these letters you will get charged.

Example:

domännamn.se - This is an IDN

domainname.se - This is NOT an IDN

Well, 'ögg' doesn't mean anything in Swedish. I checked 'Swedish pages only' at google.se for the term 'ögg' and got 1240 results. A search without that restriction gives about 119 000 results. Most results seems to be German.

Since the IDN market is quite new for .se and most people don't even know that they can use letters like å, ä and ö in a domain name, I think the value at the moment is quite low. It might be a good investment for the future though

Much worse than "ögg". Try looking for Swedish words. Wikipedia is useful or use an online dictionary or translator.

The only IDN domains that make sence are the ones that is a word containing for example å, ä or ö. If we take 'lägenhet' for example (which means 'appartment'), it's a word that contains 'ä'. Earlier, when we couldn't use IDN domains, you had to register 'lagenhet.se'. So you're exchanging ä->a, å->a, ö->o, but that doesn't mean that doing the other way around will get you anything that makes sence. Like for example when you take 'yahoo' and then exchange o->ö and get 'yahöö'. Changing o->ö can make as much sence as changing 'o' to just some random letter.

You need to start in the other end as thefabfive suggested. Wikipedia is a great source to check if you've got something that makes sense or not.

champ_rock - to send an email to an IDN you need an IDN compatible email program like Thunderbird. Or you can use the punycode (ögg.se -> xn--gg-eka.se). However, you would have to enable email at Loopia for this domain first. I haven't tried this yet so I'm not sure of the procedure. Good luck.

Thanks, I appreciate the compliment. It took a while to find available ones to reg. There are still some out there, but there must have been some real Swedish pioneers regging .se IDNs, because a lot of the top keywords have been gone for quite a long time. Some folks out there have some amazing vision and forward-thinking!

Like most ccTlds a transfer to another registrant is considered a new registration.

As soon as the registration is done the registrant is able to only communicate with the registry. As you can administrate all your information directly at the registry and also be billed directly by the registry the only thing you need the registrar for is the registration. It's nothing such as a administering registrar for .se domain names.

To transfer a domain to a new registrant you have to do this at one of many .se registrars. This is because a transfer is treated as a new registration. It doesn't matter what registrar you registered the domain at.

Your chosen registrar will get you the documents you need to complete the transfer. All this information is available at the registry:

Yes, I do, and the first time through it was a bit of a pain. Absalon, a user on another forum that deals with "DN Local dot com" info, was a huge help, and the folks at Loopia helped a lot as well.

Basically, to push the domain to another person, you have to fill out a form from Loopia, sign it and fax it or mail it back to them. Once they have the forms, it takes roughly 5 days to make the transfer (or in my case, they lose the docs, I have to apologize to the guy buying my domains, and it takes about 2 1/2 weeks - but at least they were helpful and apologetic about it).

Also, the new owner is charged a 240 SEK fee per domain for the ownership change. That's about $35 USD.

All in all, the best bet is to email Loopia directly and work with them on the best way to finalize the transfer. They will email you in English if you prefer, and they really are very helpful.
