Hi,

Just been thinking about flipping domains, has anyone ever started from nothing and flipped domains making them a millionaire ?

What I mean is -

1.Reg or buy one domain $xxx

2.Sell for low $x,xxx

3 Buy next one for low $x,xxx

4 Sell for high $x,xxx

5 Buy next one for high $x,xxx

6 Sell for Low $xx,xxx

and so on.....

I wonder if it takes luck, skill or having a end-user database ready and waiting.... or all three?

Can this be done do you think?

The concept is trading a paper clip up to a house (i think some guy did this, publicity helps along the way)

Now trading and splitting into 8 names down the road is a different story, thats just sound business.

The problem with doing it directly is you will get stuck sitting on a name for a long time, and the people you try to trade with will get smarter as the domain vale goes up.

The guy who did this documented everything - it was called 'One Red Papeclip' You can check out his story here.

He wound up with a $450,000 house in the span of a year using Craigslist.. He also had some amazingly lucky breaks along the way (getting and trading radio time...etc..), but an inspirational story nonetheless.

They even started a tv show based on this premise: 'Barter Kings'
The show seems like a load of crap (completely staged), and it will make u cringe to see someone trade something that's easily worth ten times the value of some thing, but it could still spark some creativity.

This could be a good idea for a reality show of your own stu... Make a few calls :)

I have started something like this a few years ago at $0, I made it up to around $150 after a few flips (domainers to domainers and 1 enduser in the mix), 2 steps forward and 1 back, not every flip was successful and was a lot of hard work..

I don't think it will be quite as easy in 2013 with the reseller market being as dead as it is now, if going the enduser route only you need a lot of lucky shots along the way..

I documented the whole process, planning to continue where I stopped some day..

Anything is possible. Warren Buffett started with $25,000.

You have to be really, really smart and very particular about where you spend your money. Only buy domains that will have multiple motivated buyers. Have very good sales techniques to help drive up demand for your domains. Good common sense business instincts and negotiating skills to know when to sell and when to keep. And also having time to develop your sites to make money for you and also boost up their value, doesn't hurt either.

Although the economy is so poor right now things are more difficult to make big sales, but this same poor economy also creates opportunities for those who have a vision for the future.

I have decided to attempt $0 - $500,000

At the start of the year I brokered a sale and bought 2 domains from the fee of this, last week I sold one of them domains and bought 2 more domains so now I have 3(sig).

When I sell 1 I plan to buy 2 and so on......

This is not my main plan for the year but a side project.

In the last 2 days I have signed up with one of the biggest names in the business , a partnership that will exclusively broker 2 of the domains for 1 year....

To be honest I see this as a slow process in terms of making $500k , but I have set the wheels in motion and it is a bit of fun too...

If I fail then I have failed with $0, If I succeed then I will have achieved the impossible in my eyes.

I think everyone should give it a go, what is there to loose?

Cheers

P.S. If I do get to $500,000 then Im going for $1,000,000

I would say your chances are better at names than most anything else. To really start from nothing and go to a million, with coupons to start, a few dollars would do(though surely more helps).

There are still enough good names unregistered that I think its possible, and if not drops, gd auctions, and forums.

I think someone REALLY SHARP and focused could still do that. Names are all one of a kind, but with "spoilage"

You can make decent money, but the market is small, tough to wait out end users with much inventory. I would say "web development" might be a bit faster way in the long wrong, but then you bring even more skill needed into a process that needs plenty to start with.

while lots of people were selling in the recession I was buying shares in Barclay's Bank on the UK stock market once it dropped to 0.55p from 3.88p

It's all very nice that it worked for you but everybody knows that the stock market is a high risk investment and if you have been there for some time I am pretty sure that you have lost money too.

Only an idiot would risk his life savings to invest it in high risk activities like buying shares or domaining, if you can afford to lose the money great, otherwise the wise thing to do is to stay away. Lots of people win money at this but even more lose money, you hardly hear about the latter.
