opinion Flippa Listing That Sell for Less then Upgrades...

I often look at the recently sold domain names on Flippa - I always notice a LARGE number of domains with pictures next to them (meaning that the seller paid $350 to upgrade to ultra premium listing) that end up selling for WAY less then $350.

I am curious how these people continuing to list their auctions this way and not just losing tons of money?

Check out the attached screen shot - 3/3 of the domains with ultra premium $350 upgrades sold for under $300...One package of 4 .io domains went for only $55 ....

Did this person just lose over $400 (reg fees, listing fees, success fees) trying to sell these domains?!?! It's crazy to me. There must be a way that people are getting to list their pictures without premium upgrades though I have inquired to Flippa about this and they told me there is no other way to do it. Yet the person who sold their domains for $55 has many other auctions with pictures that sold for less than 350 as well. There is something very fishy about this to me...

YEP...that's a gorgeous combination between brainless domainer + questionable ( = some love Flippa, some hate it ) marketplace...

Domains that are brokered through Flippa receive the upgrades.
No out of pocket costs, but a total commission of 15% instead of 10%.

I wish they would automate the enitre system and follow this format, making an even playing field.

I would guess it's either what @dmyre said...Or, they could just be using free credits they had earned from Flippa. Whether it be from domain appraisals, previous auctions that didn't sell..etc. Flippa is usually pretty generous about giving away free credits, half priced upgrades, and other types of offers. Especially if you have something that didn't sell.

Oh ok that does make sense....I would be surprised Flippa would broker some of those pretty not-so-premium domains though

Flippa would run out of business in a month. I am a small investor with about 200 domains. there are many with over 10,000's.
Every one would take the featured listings offering 15% ---> All the listings will have a logo, a snapshot --- > Over 1,000,000 domains in the newsletter---> over 1 million domains on twitter and facebook---> no listing would stand out---> investors/ end users will be pissed because they see shitty names everywhere---> no one will buy from flippa.

Even playing field would be having confidence that your domain can sell for $10,000 or more and investing $350 in that confidence.

Edit: I misunderstood what was being said. I apologize.

It's also important to note that none of those are brokered auctions.

Ok, first I'd like to say the $249 upgrade comes with the logo option as well.

No it does not.....don't you work for Flippa? I would think you knew your own marketplace lol

It has a larger icon next to it for the 250 upgrade but no custom logo option is offered

I think I misunderstood the point being made. My bad.

@aditya agrawal yes I agree there needs to be some level set so that the crappy domains are weeded out but the options are quite a bit expensive at this point. Not every domain is worth $10,000 so therefore listing as a premium auction for the $350 upgrade is often not worth it. But there should be a middle ground for say $400-$1000 domains that offer more reasonable upgrades that actually have impact on the auction visibility. For instance $39 gets you a Premium Rotating front page listing on SEDO for 30 days which to me seems like a much better deal. ($49 front page listing on Flippa gets you around 24-48 hours worth of exposure as I have done it a few time now and know from experience)

Can be explained rather easily...

...Flippa is usually pretty generous about giving away free credits, half priced upgrades, and other types of offers. Especially if you have something that didn't sell.

That's it. If you're placing, say, 2+ domains up and want a 2-for-1 premium offer, email [email protected]. My colleague @Devoir Funches will be happy to assist. We are worried about over-saturation, however, which a lot of you have voiced concern over as well. I'll address below.

We don't :|

Agreed, and we have a "task force" working on this currently. I may have mentioned elsewhere that we have a major redesign pending, and we'll be working to incorporate new upgrade pricing as well.
