Hi guys,

Recently I was asked to reappraisal one of our domains -- FIN.com. I have some ideas about the worth of the name. However, the true is that I really don’t know for sure. If forum members can provide some help, I would really appreciate.

Here is some basic information about the name.

Fin, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, is an abbreviation of the word Finance or Financial. Correct me if I am wrong. Fin is the only three-letter word that related to the financial industry. Google search of Fin yields 355 million results. The word fin has been used by various entities including:

Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Estonia (www.fin.ee)
Department of Finance of Canada (www.fin.gc.ca)
Banco central del Ecuador (www.bce.fin.ec)
Alaska Department of Administration - Division of Finance (www.fin.admin.state.ak.us)

The domain currently receives 300-500 type in daily. We recently made a ppc website for the name. Visitors seem very interested in Investment and Mutual Fund related subjects. Anyway, please feel free to check it out and make comments.

Regards,
Mlee

Should be an easy mid-high $xx,xxx to a reseller.

Fully developed for the right end user could even mean pretty high $xxx, xxx!

You have a gem. JMHO (but I'm a noob and my opinion still sucks ;) )

I think you could fetch $100,000 currently and much more to an end user! :tu:

Good luck, definitely interested in hearing the offer you received.

At least low $xxx, xxx, even to $x,xxx, xxx. Wall Street might be very interested. Fin.com is truly a great white shark of a name.

Thanks guys.

So far the forum member’s appraisals have been between $16,911 to 1,000,000.

A few days ago, we received an unsolicited offer through our website contact link. The offer was $250,000. The buyer stated that if we act quickly, they would show some flexibility with the purchase price.

Since we had no plan to sell the name, we did not make a counter offer. We rejected the offer based upon the following analysis.

The domain is just out of the parking and currently attracting 300 to 500 type-ins a day. About 80% of traffics are from US and 15% from EU. From our internal data, we know most of our visitors interested in Mutual Fund an Investment related subjects. We asked ourselves what does this target traffics mean to a big 100 billion plus mutual fund company?

According to US census data, about 5% of US populations are millionaires. If one percent of our visitors transfer their investment portfolio to our mutual fund sponsors, if one of them is a millionaire, our sponsor could receive 2 million dollars of asset inflow per day or 730 million per year. Because of our domain name, the mutual fund company will receive additional 7.5 million dollars of gross profit per year. If the mutual fund company takes over our domain and does some marketing, the gross profit could easily top 10 million per year. We asked ourselves, could Business.com do as well as Fin.com to its end users? We know there are many 100 billion plus mutual fund companies out there would be interested in hearing our stories. Therefore, we firmly rejected the $250,000 offer.

mlee,

A very good call. I did think the domain itself was worth $250K, but developed may be making lot more than that.

Mutual funds in US is big, today its estimated at $7 trillion dollars.

"An estimated 96million individuals in 54.9 million U.S. households - representing 48 percent of all U.S. households - owned mutual funds as of June 2006, according to a survey by the Investment Company Institute."
resource

good luck with your venture.

I forgot to mention in my last post was the recent 3 million dollar sale of Vadka.com. This sale certainly affected our decision in rejecting the $250,000 offer.

We compare the brandbility of the two domains. We find that Fin is much more brandable than Vodka.

Both names are dictionary words. Fin, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, is an abbreviation of the word Finance or Financial. Vodka, in other hand, stands for hard liquor. They are both very targeted and pointing to their own industry. Vodka is closer to its industry than Fin. Fin, however, is shorter and easier to spell.

We compare the marker size of each industry. The financial service industry is multi-trillion dollars. The vodka industry is less than a billion.

We also try to find out how an end user can benefit from the names. For vodka.com, we believe the main goal is to advertise the end user’s product. For fin.com, in addition to advertising, the end user can also sells their products online which can reach billions dollars a year. We know that financial products can be very easily sold over the Internet. Vodka cannot.

Just because the word FIN is shorter than the word Finance does not mean it is better. It is not even close. Even if you look at OVT scores the word FIN has a horrible OVT of only 6k. Finance is 346k. Finance also has more google results. If you owned the name Finance.com then I would say its worth millions for all of the reasons you named. But just because finance is a trillion dollar industry doesnt mean the shortened word Fin would be worth millions like you are thinking it would. I would have definitely taken a 250k offer for this one.
